KDE 3.X was made by Lego, KDE 4.X was made by crack-addicted chimps, so that just leaves Gnome.

Or does it?

Vote then post a screenie of (what you think is) your yummy desktop.

I use Gnome as i do a lot of GTK programming, plus i like it. Also it's nice to be able to hop on any linux box and know where everything is.

I'll say Gnome as I use it the most but TBH I don't really have a preference. I seem to spend most of my time in a terminal window Laughing

Obviously, I have to use gnome on my turbolinux 6, but i prefer KDE, I think Mandriva 2006 was my most favourite distro, except the support was shit.

for me. KDE seems to perform faster on my laptop. i also prefer a lot of the apps that come bundled with KDE. kate being one of my most used apps. automatic text completion is useful as avoids spelling mistakes for example.
gnome is simple and takes virtually no tinkering to make it most useful. however i find that KDE is more productive after a bit of configuration for me. hence it is my prefered desktop. it also looks cooler.
i used to run XFCE on a a desktop that i acquired for free. no idea what i switched to gnome as i liked XFCE. worked really well on low end hard ware

When I first tried Linux in 2007 I couldn't get on with Gnome. I thought it was too simple. However, at this point I was dabbling around and was after something exciting.

I gave Linux a rest for a while but in 2009 I wanted to upgrade from XP but couldn't stand Vista and Win7. What I wanted was something functional, and Gnome delivers on this. Everything is easy to find, and Gnome has user interface guidelines that are on par with Apple. I think once Unity becomes more mature I think this will be even better.

Screenshot of my desktop tomorrow.

Have always used Gnome and always will, I don't really get on with the other ones. I do like xfce on low powered machines though.

Using Ubuntu 10.10 with Elegant Gnome theme.

Standard Ubuntu 10.10 theme with custom background and title bar buttons on the right for me, with a tray thing on the bottom left.

I like Gnome, I really do, but the default in Gnome 3 will be Gnome shell, and Gnome shell sucks, in my opinion. While you'll still be able to go back to metacity (or compiz) + gnome panel like now, eventually that option will be phased out.

SO I switched to KDE4 recently, and as of the 4.4 version it's great (I LOATHED KDE4 when it first came out) I actually prefer KDE4 to gnome now, the desktop effects (if enabled) cost less CPU and it feels a lot more responsive. That being said it has it's bugs and oddities still, like whenever I change the settings for the KDM login screen it resets my fonts to the default, but as that's something I rarely do I can live with it.

This was my desktop for October (pacman halloween :p )
