PostPosted: 01:07 - 06 Nov 2010    Post subject: A little insurance question Reply with quote

Hello all, I haven't posted on the forums in some time now. I was talking to a possible new biker friend earlier and his question was this:

"I have my license for 7 months now but I get much cheaper quotes when I put my license held for 1 year. If I took out insurance now and had to make a claim after 5 months (when my license WILL have een held for 1 year) will I be covered"

Now my response to him was to not take the risk over a few quid but the question did stick to my mind and I haven't been able to find an answer. What does BCF think/know?

Regards, That-Kid-O

Doubtful.

Insurers hate paying out and your mate is giving them a perfectly valid reason to void the policy.

If they investigated, they would have an easy way to make trouble.
So it would very much depend on the claim and general circumstances (including probably how busy they are.)

Not worth it. When you go and get qoutes the insurers ask you how long have you held your licence.
Option 1 - less tham 1 year
Option 2 - 1 to 2 years etc

They will find out that your info dont match when you come to make a claim and then your buggered[/b]

What you have to remember is we pay these companies millions every year in the hope that we never have to use them. They accept our money in the hope they never have to pay out.

So if you forget to dot an I or cross a T and they find a way to use that so they dont have to pay out then they will.

You can lie on your CV, You can lie to a bank manager but you cant lie to the insurance company...... Just in case!

Thankyou to all that replied. I just wanted to make sure I gave some correct advise so later on he doesn't turn around and tell me I cost him a few extra quid Thumbs Up

And just out of curiosity, I was playing around with some quotes myself and it turns out if you lie about the date the vehicle was purchased the price goes down. Now in what way does owning a bike for 1 year or 3 years change the risk of an accident Confused

These insurance companies really confuse me

Wear and tear. An accident caused by mechanical failure is still an accident.

I completely agree with your opinion but when I submit a quote with my bike (2003 600RR) and say I have owned it for 3 years the quote is cheaper than if I say I have owned it for 1... Surely ownig it for 1 year means less wear and tear so less risk...

Its all to do with probabilities. If you have owned the same bike for 3 years and not claimed then its likely you will know more about the bike and how to ride that bike. therefore the probability of you being involved in an accident on that bike is less likely than if you own a bike for only 1 year. Your not as familiar with the bike.

Yes - they can check the V5.
If it's a claim where you're actually claiming for the bike, they will ask for the v5 definitely.

Insurance forms are always valid for when you fill them in. The question in the original post would make the insurance invalid.

Lol I thought they could, no getting away from them. What I am finding hard to believe is that last year I paid £550 for my TPF&T cover and my renewal quote was £1250 and online the best price I could find was £950. What is going on here? I haven't got any tickets/points/fines or claims Sad

Could call up your insurers and say "oi! What the fudge!? Why had my premium increased?"

The thieving cnuts just tell me they can't do anything about it Sad

Before I go discount hunting does anybody know if the technique of calling a couple and comparing prices and asking for some discount actually works to knock a 5-10% off the price or will it be a waste of my time?

I am also thinking of telling a little white lie myself about my employment and putting something like 'tutor' instead of student. Can this be found out? because being at Brighton university i can find many people that will just say i give them private tutoring.

Don't bother lying, they only need a wiff of doubt in the event of a claim and you'll have a private investigator all over you.

Yes there is mileage in ringing around. I halved my quote by ringing up. 1100 + 750 excess to 600 + 450 excess

You're not really taking the hint here, are you?
Declare you are a student. You'll be registered as a full time student, it wont take them long to find out and blow any claim to the contrary out the window.
YES they load the premium for students.
Students tend to be awkward, irresponsible, and generally smart-arsed, trying to stretch the grant check to the max, to be able to do stupid things for 'fun', getting into all manner of situations, with or without motorvehicles, which tend to be left in less secure places, when they aren't being over-loaded or raced around, in a generally neglected condition.
Declare 'student' and they will load your policy for it, but they'll also have to take into account some of the other anomolies of the life style, like the bike being registered at mum & dads, or not being kept at registered address over-night, when you spend the week-end kipping on a mates floor at another campus half the country away or whatever.
Now, your a student. That means you are smart, but that your knowledge is incomplete. Stop trying to be clever and learn something from what the folk here have been trying to say!

In reality, I've seen a lot of poeple not be entirely truthful in various ways on insurance and have claims go through fine.

For me, I think it's not worth the risks; for other people it may well be.

I've got insurance down a decent amount by calling the two lowest companies. Even it's £5, if you're on a not too high wage, that's easily an hour's work or more - so definitely worth a few calls, I reckon. When you're talking getting it £30 extra in your back pocket for ten minutes of phone calls, that's a VERY good rate of pay in most people's books!

I can tell you that my son has just got his 1st insurance policy and had to send a copy of his license and card to the insurance company before they would send the policy out? this maybe just certain procedures for certain companys!!

so the morale is, insurance is what it is... insurance... false information will leave you with no insurance.

Most peoples insurance seems to have gone up.
Car 9 years NCB up to £200 from £120 and THAT was the cheapest...
Bike 3 years NCB up £20 on the year.

You have to remember ins companies had a very hard start to this year with all the bad weather and the stupid muppets who could not drive on that 5 m/m of snow and managed to crash into anything that was stood near them. Twisted Evil Who then claimed for massive damages.

I don't condone lieing to your insurers, but I've never once been asked for any documentation to prove no claims bonus, length of ownership and driving license etc.
Even during and following claims the same has held true.
