Is there any decent free none utility defragmentation software knocking about which is quicker than Vista's?

best i've came across. actually downloaded this when i had vista BECAUSE of the utter shit defrag that it comes with. This not only will defrag quickly showing detailed analysis of the HDD, but it'll order files based on usage frequency, for more effective operation Smile can't complain

Vista takes hours because its shit! I had vista on an old system and nothing would work with it. Even switching to xp mode. So the chances are that you hit the defrag button and it takes 2 hours for the operating system to work out what to do, Another hour for it to find the compatibility program and 5 mins to do the actual work.

Hehe i just tried both of those defraggers on 2 20gb drives and it still took almost 2 hours to defrag each drive.

I'm thinking i need a pc upgrade soon =/

It speeds up hardware hoggers like vista.

Vista's hardware hogging is mostly of ram, so defragging the disk won't help much. Defragging depends completely on the disk size, number of files and time since last defrag. So if you fresh install vista on an empty drive defrag will take < 5 seconds.

Defragging was important back in the days of limited disk space and high seek times, these days buffers are big enough and transfer rates slow enough that the seek time doesn't have any real effect.

I'm still tempted to buy an SSD, but it's probably a crap ideal till them get a bit better

never defragged Vista either, still ran perfectly well until Win 7 landed on my desk.

i'd rather play with the services than waste hours defragging a hard drive

No one should be using vista, that thing is worse than cancer. If using windows I would go for either windows 7 or XP.

I upgraded a computer from Vista to 7 and the upgrade freed up 11GB of hard disk space. So apparently there is at least 11GB worth of useless crap that comes with Vista.

Iv'e had one, you don't need to defrag SSHD but they are very glitchy, must be a hardware read right thing.

Good god, please don't defrag an SSD, they only have a limited number or writes and rewrites, defragging is moving sectors of data around, therefore = lots of rw/r.

Also, I would pay for 2hrs defragging. I haven't tried to defrag a hard drive since the 2gb days, with 2x 1TB hard drives it would never finish, even with my i7 Very Happy.

Hmm.
I wouldn't fancy using a drive that "wears out" quickly Razz

Can't see any use for them other than to load backups onto and never use again untill backup is needed.

Is that the point of these drives?

No moving parts, so no discs to fuck up by dropping your laptop or something, lower power usage, silent, 0 seek time as there is no disk to spin round and head to move to a required position, potentially much faster read write speeds. They are basically like RAM but they keep their contents when turned off. Hard disks get fragmented when a file gets split up into lots of locations. The reason this is done is because the outer part of the disk can contain more data and be accessed quicker. As the disk fills up it gets slower as the slower bits get used. A brand new hard disk can go at about 75mb/s. As the disk gets older and bits get damaged, and as the disk fills up with data it gets slower, usually dropping to about 40mb/s. Write speed can be less.
Typical SSD speeds are:
Read Speed: 285MB/Sec, Write Speed: 275MB/Sec
Some are MUCH better up to:
Read 1400MB/s, Write 1400MB/s

Generally they're only great for laptops atm as they use less power and allow it to boot much faster, but they are becoming cheaper, faster and longer lasting and in a few years will be the standard for desktops.
These days almost all come with fancy tech on them to spread the read & write locations about the drive space to reduce wear on each area. When they wear out they reduce in capacity, rather than lose data or just stop working.

They are still very expensive, they never need de-fragmenting, you can drop them with little or no effect (unlike plattered hard drives), and the read writes supposed to be a bit quicker. All I can say is that the one I had was a bit glitchy in my VAIO. O/S kept crashing, it was brand new.

I say the glitch trait is linked to the SSD because I have never experienced the anomaly before in other computers. A reboot sorts it.
But then it may have just been the one I had, I would read people reviews before splashing out.

Yes it sounds great. It's the short lifespan that gets me though.
I consider myself an average user and i suspect the drive wouldn't last long with the stuff i do to my drives.
Would be interesting to see exactly how long they last though.

They do last longer.

If you think about a non-volatile flash memory type pendrive.

Some allow 1 million write or erase cycles and have a 10 year data retention cycle.”
USB flash drives allow reading, writing, and erasing of data, with some allowing 1 million write/erase cycles in each cell of memory: if 100 uses per day, 1 million cycles could span 10,000 days or over 27 years. https://www.cfgear.com/how-long-does-a-flash-drive-last/

SLC based memory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_cell#Single-level_cell
SLC based memory is good for around 100,000 writes; more commonly used MLC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_cell for around 10,000. The USB connector can withstand approximately 1,500 connect/disconnect cycles.

SSD's are 30 to 200 times larger than pen drives so do the maths.
This is why they are very expensive, they last for ever.

My laptop takes one but they want £250 quid for it.
I think it's something to do with the connection type or something.
It's not as common as most are.

The worst drives take about 8 years of continuous use to kill, the better ones are 30+. When i say continuous, i mean it, actually trying to wear the thing out 24/7 rather that just using it. You'd have to write a script to thrash the shit out of it night and day Laughing

As far as i'm concerned capacity & price are why i don't have one. Sure you can get a 2TB one, but it's going to cost £6000. Currently the 64GB ones are reasonable (£100ish) but a lot aren't very fast. If they were 128GB 300mb/300mb and £100, i'd buy 2 and raid them Laughing
