Okay so as some of you may know I have basically rebuilt my bike apart from the gearbox and crankshaft.

My clutch is a bit knackered. The plates were gone so we replaced these but only the friction plates. I couldn't find standard springs anywhere so I decided not to get them. By the looks of the plates that were actually in there it is the first change this bike has had and is at 8850 miles. Have tried buying new cables but everyone I seem to get is too short :/ I have also bought two throttle cables now but they are the same so if I can drive my bike to a shop I could ask for a new one "For this bike".

My question is does anyone know where I can get standard springs for my bike as all I can find are race ones. And I imagine the race ones wouldn't be correct as they are meant for 70 and 80cc bore kits.

Any advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated (I may be wrong, it might not even be the springs)

Thanks Thumbs Up

I've only once known of someone having problems due to a damaged clutch spring. They can get a bit tired on really old bikes, but you should be able to measure them to check.

Cable length, condition, routing, lever etc can all make the clutch missbehave and are far more likely causes. What exactly are the symptoms?

Basically like its permanently held in, but its not. The lever and perch and adjuster are all a bit shit but I cant find any direct replacements for those either. Just universal ASV's and they are £70, fuck off!

Any ideas?

Okay so it won't engage. Look at the lever on the engine case and slacken the cable until that's back all the way and the clutch should be constantly engaged. If it's not then your problem is to do with the assembly of the internal system rather than cables and levers.

Strong clutch springs will make it harder to pull the clutch in.
However, when you have, it's fine. If it's a 50, I don't expect it'll be a big issue - on my zx9 it's 'race' clutch does get a bit tiresome when trying to bump start the bike and some people found it a bit heavy in normal use, though I was fine.

So it won't actually change the performance of the clutch, only it will make it tighter then? I cant buy springs on their own but only with a clutch kit so with plates aswell how will it be?

Probably looking at the polini as it has presssure and friction plates. Will ring up a garage to see if he can get me some springs first though.

Thanks gents Thumbs Up

If it's a whole 'race' kit, it may make it a bit more 'grabby'. But, in my experience, it's never been an issue - I've used 'race' kits on plenty of road bikes and never had a problem.
Worst case, you'll need slightly finer clutch control, but providing you're not totally cack-handed, it should be fine.

And also, what makes me think its not the lever/cable whatever is that when we took all of the clutch cable and lever (on the actual spline) off, it still had the same effect.

Really, any ideas as I am on the road on three weeks friday Shocked
