clunk intio gear

Is it normal for you bike to make a clunk noise when you select a new gear?
Mine does and was just wondering if this is normal. I ride a gsxr k3 is that helps

Mine clunks when the engine is cold, warm and it's fine.

I suppose that depends on what you mean when you say "select a New gear"
If you mean while stationary it clunks when you go from neutral to first...all bikes do that to some degree,

From neutral to first every bike I've ever heard makes a good clunk. Other gears I suppose it depends on the bike. Nothing to worry about I should imagine

Yep. And, according to my dad, Suzuki's are worse!

That's okay then its quite a nice sounding clunk if there is one.
Dosent sound like a grinding or snapping just a
"That's a gear" clunk lol

And, if anyone's interested, here comes the science bit...

Most bikes have a wet clutch - this means the clutch is immersed in oil. Now, in a dry clutch, when you pull the clutch lever the friction plates separate and there is no connection between the engine and the gearbox - this is what allows you to make a gear change. However, in a wet clutch the oil gets between the friction surfaces and acts like a viscous coupling - this means that there is a small amount of drive being transmitted through the oil to the clutch plates. In this way there is always a little bit of pressure driving through the gearbox, hence the 'clunk', as the input shaft is still spinning a bit when you select the gear. A cold oil is thicker and makes the situation 'worse'.

This is the same reason that it is more difficult to push a bike in gear, even with the clutch pulled in. Also why the back wheel often spins a little when the engine is running and its up on a paddock stand, even in neutral (as you also get a small viscous-coupling effect across the gearbox shaft-to-gears).

My GSXR would make a sattisfying clunk into first.

The new one does if I'm still moving but it does the same clunk heading into second. At first I was worried about it but she seems to run fine.

Some bikes have a clunk engineered into the design. The new Bonnys from Triumph were deemed to unclunky in development by the focus groups that tested and a retro feel was built into the box.

My yamaha sounds like I used a hammer to change from neutral to 1st. After that it's not so bad.

my fazer when cold is like the bolt action on a howitzer! sounds good though in a perverse sort of way, i always try and get the oil at least a bit warm before setting off though lol.

If you grease your filanges regularly then it can minimise this clunk, greased filanges ftw!
