If I install this, am I gonna fuck up my computer?
I have a one of them 4(2) disk/memory thingys. The man in the shop did explain it in a way I could understand when I bought it (about 18 months ago).
Anyway.
I've never had a virus checker properly installed on it, been thinking for ages "Must do that", and there was a Macafee thing which occasionally popped up saying "Ugh, you've got crap in your system, sort it out" - and I think a Norton/Symantec one as well, but I never properly installed and ran them regularly.
So yesterday I thought "No, really, do it." and I installed the free AVG thing (which I have had before and which was great).
And its cleaned a bunch of junk up, a few little greeblies which had got in, and I also ran the free one-time PC cleanup they offer too (which I am thinking of buying)
So now its crashing one of my programs in Facebook, which I think has something to do with Flash, wh ich it must have "cleaned up". Its no biggie, its only a FB game which I really don't need the addiction to,and I can probably update my Flash without too much problems, as I usually run Firefox which work well for my purposes.
And Firefox upgrades seem fairly seamless ... very little goes wrong, I don't have a great need for a super duper system.
But its suggested that I install this Windows Service Pack 2.
If I install Windows Vista SP2, is it likely to fuck up ... ?anything?
Should I just install Windows 7 over the top instead?
If I do that, will I lose anything?
Attn Repost Police: I searched, I couldn't find any discussions about it, but linkies if I am being dense would be much appreciated. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life.

Thanks chaps
I'll just stick the Service Pack in for now and see what happens.
Hope it don't take too long to instal: his Majesty is supposed to be coming back to pick me up for a trip to France/Italy at some point today (we're already a day and a half late) (!!) and I won't be here for a couple of days, hopefully it will get done before he gets back
When I get back (if I actually bloody go!), I'm obviously going to have to seriously consider getting round to doing some "housework"... I have picture and music files all over the bloody place.
THEN I'll do a proper nice back-up.
And then maybe instal Windows 7... ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Alright, well that went in quite smoothly (as the actress said to the bishop)
There are a few little peculiarities that I will look at when I get back, but as I am still cooling my heels indoors I have at least started to move all my files to sensible places. I *might* defrag based on that program in the other thread further down, but for now it seems to have installed the Service Pack 2 ok.
(its making a weird little noise in the background, though) ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Old Thread Alert!
The last post was made 15 years, 308 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful? |
