A mate of mine has not long had a spill on his Yam TDM850 Sad and is now trying to put things right.
He has just done a tot-up of parts the bike will need to make it roadworthy again.
If he buys new parts, it will triple the value of the bike according to what he paid for it Shocked .

So he`s been doing the sums and looking on fleece-bay for used bits.
The thing is, is he going to get his money back by selling it as a roadworthy bike with all the bits replaced?
How much is a 1991 TDM 850 worth?.
I saw it before the crash and it was tidy but not showroom by a long chalk.

I think that as the frame and engine are both in good order and un-harmed, the bike is worth saving.
Basicly he had a mild/medium front-end stuff.
Broken bits include lights, forks, levers, various plastics from the front.
Everything needed is availible on fleece-bay for a lot less than new prices.
Is it viable to make it good again or should it go to the great scrapheap in the sky?

I seek the advice of the mighty BCF Thumbs Up

Was it a write off? I sold my cat C zzr without repairing it based on the fact that I wouldn't get the money it would cost to fix it up back when I sold it.

Bikes are for riding not an investment. Crashing bikes is expensive, learn to deal with it.

Purely financially, he'll probably get most money breaking the bike for parts. Fine if you have plenty of time & space, and don't mind getting left with a few bits that nobody wants.

But then he's left without a bike. Where's the fun in that?

Fix it on the cheap from ebay bits, whatever will get it going. Forget the plastics, bodgery is the way forward.

Edit: tip - add up what it's going to cost to fix, then look through autotrader/ebay classifieds and see what bike you can get for that much money.

If he was TP then buy the cheap parts and repair it. If he hasn't gone throught the insurance then it won't have a claim made against it.

If FC get the insurance to sort it Thumbs Up

Then it's obviously better to buy an equivalent bike, either as a runner, or a donor. Don't get emotionally attached to a bike - they're just a pile of parts.

Mr Al : quote : "Bikes are for riding and not investment. Crashing bikes is expensive, learn to deal with it."
This little crash has`nt cost me a penny Thumbs Up Smile .

Mr Pax & Mr Roger.
He is thinking long and hard about putting it back on the road again, and I think it`s going to be the fleece-bay route.
We were talking about it last night and he said that it`s not worth losing his no claims for a bike the does`nt appear to be worth a great deal.

so much for my own winter project Confused , looks like we`ll be nursing his pile of bits back to life, Oh well, not to worry, at least it wont cost me half as much as my own projects usually do Smile

Fair point, if you enjoy fettling (I do). I'd still suggest pricing up all the parts from fleaBay and breakers first, then seeing if you can find an equivalent or better bike for less.

Get him on Carpe-TDM.net. THey will have good advice and may even have alot of the parts he needs, failing that there will be plenty of people after bits.

It's worth taking very good stock of what needs to be replaced.
Then you can also consider what can be missed out - ie, head lights and front fairingy bits replaced with an enduro style headlight or similar.
