Hi guy's!, I have a mate with a dinosaur of a computer?

Basically he has windows 200o with a 1GHZ processor or something. Internet Explorer 5.5 does not support flash so he can't use Youtube, or stream stuff. ETC

His BIOS won't allow me to boot from USB so I can't install portable Linux.

What I am looking for a hardware friendly, user friendly as poss Linux distro ISO.
I was thinking along the lines of one of those netbook distro’s!

Then I need some free buring software to burn the ISO
I have Vista Premium at home maybe that has some software to allow me to burn ISO's not to sure.

imgburn is a good freeware utility for burning iso image files.
i have had good experience with puppy linux in the past. linux mint is a good distro for beginners. for older hardware i would suggest using the XFCE desktop as it is a bit lighter on resources

Another one to add to that list is dsl (damn small linux). They have a barebones version that is 40MB and will run on a 400 mhz PII processor. It has a event version if firefox that has flash, and its fully customizable like any linux, however the stock window manager flux box, isn't very user friendly, very minimalist. But ofcourse that can be replaced too.

Puppy linux will run on 128Mb of RAM (entirely in the RAM and therefore stupidly fast). Older versions will run on 64Mb. They will run on a LOT less with a swap partition but will obviously be slower.

It was purpose designed to run on old computers.

Here is something very handy:

Burn a puppy live CD/Flash drive and run it on your own machine. There is a very clever tool included in puppy that allows you to make a bootable usb drive that pretends it is similtaneously a USB flash drive, a floppy drive and a USB CD ROM. The older machine should recognize it as a FDD and boot from there.

As I recall, you go into the utility and point it at the .iso file you want to be made bootable. I see no reason why it has to be only a puppy .iso file but this may well be the best distro for the limited resources available.

You can also make a bootable floppy disk using a utility called "wakepup" which allows a computer to boot from USB even if this is not allowed in the BIOS. It will boot from the floppy then find and point an older computer to the USB drive that has the puppy .iso file on it.

The last Netscape runs perfectly fine with the latest version of flash with Windows 95. But even 98/2k can go up to IE6, which is relatively widely used by some companies.

But speaking of linux distros, If that's what you want then it's probably best.
