This may seem like a foolish question, but can I use white spirits to clean a set of carbs? I'm not sure if it'll damage the rubber components, or anything. Only reason I ask is because I've got some, and I need to get these carbs cleaned out - they've got two decades worth of muck in them.

Cheers in advance.

Why not simply use petrol to clean them?

Cleaning is what women are for.

By which I mean: borrow their nail varnish remover.

Had considered it, but it'll make my living room stink of petrol even more than usual. Actually, I'm trying to find a problem with that, but I can't. Sod it - Petrol it is Very Happy

If you want to properly clean it you need carb cleaner.

Petrol will help a bit with physical cleaning but if you think about it, they are full of petrol all the time and that is the problem...

Petrol will do ok but it isn't brilliant at cleaning gummed up carbs.

buy a can of that carb cleaner (not the airsole) and leave them to soak if they are really bad, in an hour or 2 if its good cleaner it will have removed all the white or yellow crud. if its just a matter of dirt use petrol or carb cleaner in a can and some air from a air compressor, works best anyways.
