Well its that time again, as its frigin chilly in the mornings i have decided to try these out as it seems my fingertips are my weak point in the cold, so has any one tried the new version of the oxford muffs , the bone dry ones, are they any better or just the same design as the older ones?
thanks
Mark

there the same as the old ones, pretty easy to fit, you just gotta cut a hole in them for the mirrors.

I fit a pair to my other halfs DT125 last winter and they worked well, didnt sag when wet or get caught in the levers... even when she crashed they held there shape after.

For the best results i found.

1. Remove your missors
2. put them over the bars and do up the poppers
3. Get them into possition making sure the levers dont fowl up
4. Feel where the mirror hole is and cut a small "X" in the fabric using a stanley knife blade (hole no more than 6mm across)
5. Slide the 2 leather washers over your missors and poke the mirrors through the holes and screm them into your threads.
6. Slide the leather washers onto the muffs and use super glue to slick them to the muffs but not the mirrors.

Done!! the super glue seals the hole and stops it expanding so it stays water proof and doesnt get bigger, ive tried al kinds of stuff to glue the washers on but tbh super glue always seemed to work best.

Buy Tucano Urbano one's rather than go through the faff of doing this - they already have the holes there, and well fitting rubber grommets for either large or small bar weights.

Not slagging off the tip, it works and I did it for years before coming across the TU's. But I'm lazy, and also nice to be able to transfer the muffs from bike to bike without an issue.

I'll sell you mine..reason. on both bikes ive ridden with them.. they dont keep me warm.
They keep me dry..but not warm. Ive tried fitting various ways.. and STILL I have freezing cold hands. Also a bit of hard riding pushed the right hand one against the front brake.. arse clench moment..

Doesnt sound good, my current winter gloves are 2x spada leather waterproof ones its only the past couple days its been really cold ive felt it, but i think i may be bad in the new year so its try these or try the lobster gloves, the tucanos are out of my price range really and on my ybr i dont think i run the risk of the wind lol, not sure which way to go.
Thanks for the input.

I have some of these.

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOTORCYCLE-BIKER-THERMAL-HANDLEBAR-BAR-MUFFS-WATERPROOF-/220577996812?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item335b79200c#ht_620wt_905

Not brilliant but when it is cold, would definitely ride with them than without. Does push on front brake over 55.

Heated grips coming in the next 2 weeks so the combo should be good for the icyness. Probably be over by then knowing our weather.

I have used them for the last couple of years. They are much better than nothing at all but after 30-45 minutes of riding on a day like today (coldest this year from what I remember), my fingertips were a bit cold/tingly. However, my whole hands would normally be in agony/numbness/unable to move if I didn't have them. Paired with heated grips and it was fantastic, alas one of my grips broke so this winter I'm just using the muffs, but grips alone were useless as they only heated up my palms and not the bits of my hands that bore the brunt of the wind. They look big and stupid on a 125 but I don't care, they really are essential IMO. Wind chill is the culprit for killing your hands in winter and in my opinion, muffs are the best defence against it. Just takes getting used to the controls with them on but it's really not that much of an adjustment - you'll nail it after 5 minutes of riding.

Truth be known, I'm always just a little bit frit that if I fall off, my hands will get stuck inside 'em.

I have ridden with them, had to ride the ex's bike home once with them on, most peculiar. But I expect once you get used to them, they help if you do long distances (which I don't).

When I fitted old style oxford ones to my old bike, I also ended up cutting a small hole for the bar-end weight bolts, and screwing those through the muff too (only big enough for the bolts, so the muffs were trapped/held between the weights and the grips). That kept the front end out not pushing on the levers, and also kept the hand-hole round - I found it tended to flatten itself shut otherwise, and I had to look what I was doing to get my hand back in.

Then sounds like you had crappy ones Smile.
Tucano Urbano are the ones to go for, as mentioned - they don't push back are tighter and have a nice furry bit around the entrance to the muff.... so in answer to Hellkat's comment... all in all, a muff a man would want to be inside Razz.

Yes, I've got my coat already!

As said the Tucano Urbano ones are the best commercial ones, i have the old style large furry ones with the rubber grommets, have worked on all manor of bike over the years from innova/cg/ybr 125's to gs500/er5's to bandit/hornet/er6's.

The new neoprene ones are smaller and less likely to beep your horn accidentally when on left lock, some guys at work have the new style ones, but i see their envious eyes on a cold night Razz. If you are riding all night in these temps the muffs are a must.

I thought the new style ones you're talking about for scooters and the old style ones for bigger bikes?

Somewhere there's lists of which each is suitable for.

Paddy - I've got a set of Oxford ones. Pretty poor. Had to make guards to keep off the levers and they really need to be used in combination with heated grips - at which point they do work pretty well (heated grips along and the outside of my hands get cold I find.)

That also bothers me. I can swallow the pride and fit them to the Rieju even if they look dorky, but I do flap over them... Hampering my ability to control the bike and if I fall off, what HK said.

I've crashed with them on (only at slow speed) and been fine - there's no real impediment for your hand coming out.

It takes longer to get used to it going in - generally I'm fine and could do it first time, but when I took both hands out at once, the results weren't amazing trying to get them both back in at the same time (not going that fast either, so slight moment of panic as the bike started to wobble!)

Ok, I am sold on them. I know i can get bar ends for my bike so I will try what was said a few posts up to stop them pressing on my brakes and clutch. Are muffs a universal fit or do I have to buy bike specific ones?

Edit :

As it goes, anyone here do a 40 mile of filtering a day in them? Do they effect your filtering ability at all?

I filter for 10 or so miles per day out of a 30 mile commute. Not noticed any difference, apart from it being a pain to get my hand out to wave 'thanks' to drivers who move over etc.
