PostPosted: 18:55 - 09 Dec 2010    Post subject: GSXR 600 SRAD Buying Advice Reply with quote

Going with a friend to check out a 97 GSXR SRAD tomorrow, 33000 miles. Had new chain and sprockets, owned by a mechanic with lots or receipts. I know all the paperwork to check, MOT, Tax, Vin no and engine no against v5. And know to check the basic mechanics, brakes, bearings, engine sound, looking for signs of track use such as holes drilled for retainers in the sump and hero blobs and footpeg wear, tyres electrics etc etc

Is there anything specific mechanically to look for in these bikes that often goes wrong, aside from signs of being thrashed at trackdays?

Cheers

milage is irrelavent. ignore that guy.

look for headlight lugs snapped off (give the front end a good lift to see if it moves). both up AND down. shouldnt be movement. test ride it. if the wing mirrors practically vibrate over minor bumps then avoid.

smell the oil, make sure it doesnt smell like fuel. they like to hydro lock, dumping oil into the sump if the fuel pump is dodge. easy to fix, but doesnt do your engine any good and you dont know what else they've got slack on. avoid.

other than that, knocks and rattles, the usual. if it rattles at idle but not as you rev it, chances are its the cam chain. doesnt matter that much as its cheap and easy to fix (haggling point).

blah blah blah common sense etc

The oil is supposed to be in the sump Very Happy

Agree, 33k miles on a roadgoing GSXR is nothing to worry about at all. Condition of the mechanicals is more important but don't put any weight on the 'owned by a mechanic' bit - many mechanics neglect their own machines because they are sick of working on them day in day out.

Shit modifications are probably the worst thing about SRADs - aftermarket undertrays with the shotgun lights can be badly wired and poorly installed, mini indicators are the same - are they really secure? Plus if resistors have not been correctly fitted then they will flash quickly. I'd much rather a stock bike.

Finish is not that good on the fastenings - and the paint starts to peel on the fork bottoms, but you'll notice that soon enough.

Aside from that and god awful yellow screens which some degenerates fit to them you should be OK.

Brick Wall you know what i mean.
if your fuel pumps fucked your oil will smell like fuel. ive only ever come across that on my srad, but the same happened to my friends. so clearly a common thing.

Definitely agree about headlight lugs, they were the first thing to snap on mine when I dumped it. And they sure aint cheap to replace.

Cam chain tensioners are pretty crap if it's still on an original one. Replacing with a manual one is a decent mod. So listen for cam chain-y noise.

But other than that, SRADs are bloody good bikes, my 600 is the only bike I truely miss.

Milage is irrelevant as long as it has been mechanically looked after.

One listen to the engine should be enough to tell you wether to buy it or not Thumbs Up

Coloured screens full stop. They should be left in the '90s along with Iridium visors. This goes double for purple screens fitted to green Kwackers - especially when accompanied with other purple anodised tat.

My SRAD came with a blue screen and shitty poorly wired tiny indicators courtesy of the previous owner.

They were removed.

Oh wow, a 'mum' joke, i thought they too died out in the 90's, along with coloured screens and iridium visors.

It's just a shame you didn't join them.

Mum jokes - the recourse of the mentally substandard since 1990.

Thumbs Up

I guess you must have struggled with some of the longer words, probably best to ask a grown-up for help.

Surely the fact that you're responding suggests that i have instigated a reaction.

You're not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you?

I also find it quite comical that, given some of your previous posts (for example the one about the bullied kid hanging himself), you have the audacity to accuse others of 'pointlessly' commenting in threads for no other purpose than attempting/failing to 'instigate a reaction'.
