Greener than grass newbie

Hey all,

Newbie biker from Sheffield, here. Had the sudden urge to learn to ride a few years ago and passed my A1 license in 2007.

Obviously been a while since then and not ridden a bike since my test day! Am still keen to get a bike but my bike knowledge is woeful so joining this forum I hope will help me be better informed about how to get back into it once I have the funds to get my first bike.

At the moment the kind of bikes I'd love to own are Harley Fat Boy and Moto Guzzi V7 Classic but guessing I'd need to build up to those. Anything to get me away from my wife's Citroen Pluriel would be fine though

If you passed the A1 test 3 years ago then your restriction has been lifted. No reason not to just go for the bike you want.

Think about it like riding a push bike, they say that once you ride one you never forget. Same with motorbikes. The trick is to take it easy until you get used to the power etc. But that would be the same as any bike you get.

Those rules and what licence to pass and when, are all very confusing for a noob, and I nearly went and sat the A1 myself [years ago]

So mebbe he has to sit "the bigger test" before his dreams of riding a Fat Boy are fulfilled.

Hey again and thanks for the replies.

My understanding was that my license did automatically ugrade because I asked my examiner at the end and she said that it did after 2 years. Does that mean I didn't actually sit the A1?! It was on a 125 however. I know that that particular loophole has now closed.

Maybe she just said that to get me out of there (think my pass was a close call)! Maybe the sense of relief meant I misheard what I was told!

Must admit I'd be gutted if I had to do it again, I would have saved up the pennies and done the 500 test instead if I'd known

Think I'd better check with the DVLA before I start riding a bike with a bigger engine than our car!

a1 is riding a 125 without L plates

A2 is the one that upgrades to any bike over 33hp after 2 years

Look at your licence. It'll tell you what you have. Hopefully you'll be alright but you definitely don't want to see A1 on it.

Thanks everyone for your help. You must be absolutely sick of explaining that by now.

Checked my pass certificate and it says A2, my license itself is AWOL so will check when I get a new one. From my recollection though, it did at least have a picture of a motorbike on the back so I'm claiming that means "unrestricted and voucher for a free Fatboy"
