Hey all,

Newbie biker from Sheffield, here. Had the sudden urge to learn to ride a few years ago and passed my A1 license in 2007.

Obviously been a while since then and not ridden a bike since my test day! Am still keen to get a bike but my bike knowledge is woeful so joining this forum I hope will help me be better informed about how to get back into it once I have the funds to get my first bike.

At the moment the kind of bikes I'd love to own are Harley Fat Boy and Moto Guzzi V7 Classic but guessing I'd need to build up to those. Anything to get me away from my wife's Citroen Pluriel would be fine though Smile

Thanks
Azeroth

If you passed the A1 test 3 years ago then your restriction has been lifted. No reason not to just go for the bike you want.

Think about it like riding a push bike, they say that once you ride one you never forget. Same with motorbikes. The trick is to take it easy until you get used to the power etc. But that would be the same as any bike you get.

Welcome to the forum btw

Not quite.

The a1 test is for a light motorcycle. Aka 125cc only, no time expiry. Its effectively a permanent CBT.

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069867

He's going to have to do a proper test if he wants to ride anything above 125cc and 11kw.

On the plus side it looks like it counts for exemption from doing a motorbike theory test again according to directgov.

Are we sure he actually did the A1 test, seeing as there is actually no reason to do it ever?

He is a noob by his own admission, after all.
Those rules and what licence to pass and when, are all very confusing for a noob, and I nearly went and sat the A1 myself [years ago]

So mebbe he has to sit "the bigger test" before his dreams of riding a Fat Boy are fulfilled.

Quite like the look of those V7s meself, nice "olde stylinge".

Hey again and thanks for the replies.

My understanding was that my license did automatically ugrade because I asked my examiner at the end and she said that it did after 2 years. Does that mean I didn't actually sit the A1?! It was on a 125 however. I know that that particular loophole has now closed.

Maybe she just said that to get me out of there (think my pass was a close call)! Maybe the sense of relief meant I misheard what I was told!

Must admit I'd be gutted if I had to do it again, I would have saved up the pennies and done the 500 test instead if I'd known Confused

Think I'd better check with the DVLA before I start riding a bike with a bigger engine than our car!

Thanks
Azeroth

Actually, more riders over the age of 21 do A1 than A2! A2 is really only done by 17-20 year olds, plus a few statistical anomalies (self included).

Azeroth, you'll need to check your license to be sure. There are (currently) only two types of DVLA license: A1 and A, although A can have a 2 year endorsement. There are 3 types of DSA test category though:

A1: sit on a 70-125cc bike not capable of 100kph, gets you an "A1" license that only ever lets you ride 125s up to 11kW
A2: sit on a 120-125cc capable of 100kph+, gets you an "A" license with a 2 year endorsement that limits you to 25kW bikes.
A: sit on a 35kW+ machine, get an A license with no endorsement.

Now, the quirk is that you can book an A1 test, even if your 125 is capable of 100kph, and end up with an A1 light license. So it's possible that you do have an A1 license, regardless of how fast your 125 was. Check to be sure. If your license says "A", and you sat your test over 2 years ago, then you're good to ride anything.

Look at your licence. It'll tell you what you have. Hopefully you'll be alright but you definitely don't want to see A1 on it.

Thanks everyone for your help. You must be absolutely sick of explaining that by now.

Checked my pass certificate and it says A2, my license itself is AWOL so will check when I get a new one. From my recollection though, it did at least have a picture of a motorbike on the back so I'm claiming that means "unrestricted and voucher for a free Fatboy" Wink

Cheers again

The good news is that you should have an A license free of endorsements.

The bad news is that the DVLA are notorious for "forgetting" motorcycle entitlement on replacement licenses, so hang onto that pass certificate!

This,

The DVLA (Daft Vehicle licensing arseholes) have a habit of forgetting to add the motorcycle entitlement and many have had their license returned with just the car entitlement and the hassle they have had getting the bike put back on is unreal.

After a few cases a lot of people kept a hold of their original license and claimed it as "lost" and when it came back without the bike entitlement they miraculously found their old licence and used it as proof to get the bike re added.

Mainly alliance on Dragonblight but building up some Horde on Eonar too. Been outed as a World of Warcraft geek already!

Thanks for tips on DVLA, I'll make sure the bike entitlement is there on the new one!
