Losing Power

I ride a CG 125 and I seem to be losing power at the top end.
Gets to about 40mph and then seems to shudder and not get any faster.

I'm quite new to riding so any ideas what this could be??

There are a number of possible causes, if its an old cg (mid 90's back) it would be running on points igniton. The fuel could be off if it's been stood some time.

Does it start ok?

its a 2006, 17000ish miles, it starts first time, its in good condition. It used to be a riding school bike so serviced regular.

I bought it from a guy who left it idle for about 4/5 months. But I have been starting it daily and giving it a few miles every now and again.

Is it a big job to clean the carb? (I have limited mechanical knowledge)

Buy a Haynes manual. It'll be a good introduction to home maintenance

Does it do the same thing in all gears? Ie, will it not rev out at all? You could be looking at a blocked main jet, to clear it you'll need to remove the carbs and strip it. Not a massive job in itself but I'd purchase a manual before starting to attempt it, if you rely on the bike it'd be a pain to have it sat in bits for ages..

Good indicator if it is the carb, is pop the spark plug out and check the colour of it.. if its anything other than a chocolate brown colour then its the carb or possibly a very dirty air filter...

But if you do take the carb off to clean it then i would advise putting a new plug in and air filter at the same time.

I had a problem with my old CG (2000 model) where it didn't like to go above 45mph and I just used a bottle of redex in a full tank and it fixed my problem!
