Aye. I normally get them mad-hot and fit them that way. Depending on design, you can sometimes even fold them back on themselves, install the airbox side then "pop" the other side back over the end of the carbs.
Never had them come off again once they were eventually fitted because the "memory" of the plastic is generally set in the correct place. Makes me wonder if you have the correct rubber on the correct carb or if they are upside down or similar. Kawasaki ones are often marked for orientation (so eg. it'll be one way up for the left side, the other way up for the right side) Last set of GPZ carb rubbers I fitted were marked 'L TOP' and 'R TOP'.
I would strongly encourage you to persist with the rubbers. The GPZ/GPX/ZZR series do not take well to running without the airbox. There is a lot of complex pressure wave jiggery-pokery and maths going on in there. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen.
