Very nice screen for easy reading., Good battery life. However, I personally would invest in one of the 7inch Android tablets for the same price. Does the same job, but more.... Only down side is battery life.

The Storage Options 7" tablet is my other possible choice.

The ereaders are far better for reading outdoors than anything with an LCD screen though.

I have a Sony reader which uses the same screen as the Kindle and the display quality is now excellent.

Got one a couple of weeks ago. Couple of hours later I had my entire physical collection on the Kindle from various sites.

Got to say the best thing is the screen. I absolutely can't read for a prolonged period of time from an LCD screen like the tablets/iPads. The e-ink screen on the Kindle is just like paper. In fact I thought it had a sheet of cardboard over it when it was delivered but it was the actual screen.

Only annoying thing is the screen saver - photos of old dead writers that you can't change.

yes there awesome! my dad got one for his hols and ive borrwed it to. he got the 3g version with wifi. he could download books when he was in thailand with no wifi, took about 30 seconds. shit hot thingst they are. kindle FTW

Don't bother getting an android tablet, imo: the whole point of an e-book reader is the e-ink screen, which means you can read for hours and hours and not get eye strain. You won't be able to manage that on a low resolution LCD screen. If you're not gonna use it as an e-book reader, there's little point having a tablet. May as well get a netbook and not restrict yourself as to what you can do with the thing.

Back on topic:
The new kindles are very, very good. Battery life is so long that you don't really need to worry about it so long as you stick it on charge once every few weeks or so. Not a lot more I can say about it really. Reading is fairly intuitive and unremarkable once you get over the initial novelty. No real gripes.

Having said that!
I am an eternal cheapskate and avowed bibliophile and so, personally, couldn't stand to replace all my lovely old books. For that reason, I haven't bought one.
...I just nick the missus'.

I have no idea, I just really hate the idea of them, I just like books, I like turning pages not swiping my finger. Another thing is you would have to get your favourite books over again. It would be like buying an itunes track when you already have the CD. It would be a good Idea if Amazon gave you all the books free on kindle you have ever bought through them. I do like the idea of being able to use 3g for free across the globe that is a nice touch.

How open is it? can you put any pdf's on it? I might be handy for bike manuals.

Thinking of one of these for myself and as an Xmas gift.

Trouble is the person I'd be buying for is dyslexic (why is that so hard to spell?) and finds reading black text on white paper difficult.

So, is there any option to have white text on black background or black text on colour background?

I have looked through the amazon site and couldn't find an option so suspect not unless there is a hack.

What's the storage capacity of these things?

I'd have to test drive one for a few days I think, I have like 20gb of ebooks that I've downloaded over the years but never get round to reading them as it means sitting at the computer, which obviously isn't ideal.

In my work I also have to regularly read many journal papers, and I always find it preferable to print them out as it makes them easier to read and scan through and find any relevant information, but if the Kindle is as good as they say I might be a worthwhile endeavour.

Can you upload your own PDFs or is it some shit iTunes setup where you can only out in what you've bought through iKindle or some crap like that?

Also.....£120 is a fucking pisstake just for something that let's you read PDFs, this is the biggest turnoff for me, seriously how can they justify that price?

Rather than start another Kindle thread I thought I'd ask my query on this one

It relates to DRM on the Kindle format books.
If there is more than one Kindle in the family, or come to that among a group of friends, can you swap and share the ebooks much like you'd do with the paper versions or are they locked to a specific Kindle that they were downloaded for?

I'm hoping not locked to a Kindle, particularly as you can download a Kindle reader software for PC, Macs and Phones so would have thought you can read the same book on that medium as well as a real Kindle.
