Hi all. I don't know much about engines and metal and stuff, and was wondering why a 2stroke 125 like the nsr125 has about 3 times more power than 4stroke bikes? Looking at specs for these 2 stroke bikes (nsr for example) they're running at about 30bhp.

Can a person with just a CBT legally ride one of these (as they're still only 125s) or is there also a power restriction on the CBT?

No bhp per kg limit.

Just 33bhp after passing A2 for 2 years.

No bhp per kg limit.

Just 33bhp after passing A2 for 2 years.

"With this licence you are entitled to ride a motorcycle up to 25kW (33 bhp) and a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kw/kg."

Hence the fact the Aprilia RS125 isn't A2 licence legal despite being under 33bhp. Not sure about the NSR.

However what has been said about these 2 stroke race reps is indeed true; they are generally sold in a restricted form to make just under the 14.6bhp limit. However, even restricted they'll still be a lot faster than a 10bhp 4 stroke commuter 125. Heck...even my RXS100 is a LOT faster than the YBR125 (borrowed from a friend) I'm riding at the moment to do my test on.

Depends what you want the bike for Thumbs Up

I have both, a Comet GT 250 fourstroke for the daily commute and a NSR125 RR for when I need the aroma of 2 stroke!!

I wouldn't want to use the NSR on the daily commute as it would cost a fortune in petrol and 2 stroke but then again it's a far more characterful bike to ride. The Comet plods into work everyday sipping at it's fuel supply and starting in -10 temps.

Two bikes which have roughly the same power output but totally different

True but no one really takes any notice of the power weight thing. Even less so than the 33bhp rule in the first place.

I've always found my RXS to be a lot easier and quicker to start in the cold than my friends' 4 stroke 125s. The YBR I'm on for my test at the moment takes about 5 minutes before it warms up properly in this weather.

I suppose so. For some odd reason I actually got a 33bhp bike, but I am rather pleased with my Bros, even if I've only ridden it a few hundred yards.
