I've recently noticed a slight vibration / rumble that I can feel thru the bars. I'm thinking maybe wheel bearings??

The wheels were balanced when I got the tyres changed, and I've checked the tyre condition (almost new), tyre pressure (just fine), brakes (new pads are less than half worn) etc and everything so far seems fine... but still from about 40mph the front end feels like I'm running over a fine corrugated surface.

So could it be the wheel bearings... or something else??

Tbh sounds like somebody has done a poor job balancing your wheel. Poorly balanced wheel problems get worse as your speed increases a wheel bearing issue will be bad all the time.

You can simply check your bearing one of 2 easy ways.

1. With the bike upright put the front wheel between your legs and hold it there, then try and turn the bars and feel for free play.

2. Lift the bike up into the air on the side stand and lower it onto the back wheel, get somebody to hold it there. Hold the tyre and turn the wheel to full lock both sides. Once it's on each full lock try and twist the wheel past the lock stop and look and feel for free play.

Both ways work easy enough.

Cheers for the advice Thumbs Up I may get the balancing re-checked elsewhere, and if that turns out to be the problem, my usual garage will lose a customer.

Don't be 2 harsh on them, it could just be summon stupid like a wheel weight not sticking properly and coming off.
