My dad wants to use his car which is rear wheel drive so any advice on driving one in the snow?

Most of the time it's rubbish and the wheels just spin Laughing

Half a dozen bags of sand in the boot. Slightly less air in the driving tyres?

Half an ounce of instinct helps as well, if he is a shit driver and unable to feel what the car is doing (not saying he is, but so many are) then abandon all hope.

I sold my van today, and it had a tonne bag of soil in the back (the buyer knew, part of the deal) this certainly helped with the traction, as last year empty in the snow it wouldn't pull off the driveway.

Get winter tyres.

Get momentum when there's grip.
Use gentle throttle to keep momentum up.
Do everything smoothly/gently. No harsh movements on any control.

I let my 96 M3's (so not too silly profile - 40/45) tyres down to 18psi or so and it was perfectly manageable last year, despite the tyres being sporty summer tyres.

Rear wheel drive doesn't have to be a big disadvantage, but will be without some control/'feel' as goose suggests.

That won't help on pretty much all autos. It just stops it changing into a gear higher than 2nd, doesn't stop it setting off in 1st.

All the best

What car are we talking about here?

Older cars like my old BMW (F reg) and my mates old merc (G reg) use thinner tyres than modern cars (205's on mine) and were fine really with some weight in the back and some air let out of the tyres. He did spin out once and parked the merc up after that, used his Sierra XR 4x4 then... The pussy, but then again mine has a limited slip diff Laughing

My winter tyres showed up just as the last of the snow melted round here

Actually, that's a point; forgot my car does have a LSD, which probably does make a difference.

It's a Lexus GS300 the one before the current one. It does have a snow button but I doubt it does much. The GS is actually my mums, on his own car which is also rear wheel drive it seemed to work better with the TC off Laughing

As mentioned, let some air out of the tyres (can go down as low as 10psi for slow speeds). Pump back up before getting on to clear/faster roads.

Or buy some autosocks.

my merc wasnt exactly all over the place last year. only if i gave a generous amount of throttle.
i didnt do any extreme hills or anything though. just sheet ice and snow.

just drive as normal and slow down as you would on a bike on corners

My car is crap in the snow, Auto, silly wide tyres, no LSD and over 300 horses and it is not going anywhere. So using the other half's car until the snow clears.

If you need to turn around, just pull the handbrake and one turn to the right.

Makes you wonder the origins of such stories, essentially nothing changed so why did it all of a sudden help, either it didn't and it's just bullcrap or the driver not only put it into "2" but also modified his use of the accelerator pedal.

I've read that lowering tyre pressures in the snow is actually counter productive and makes things worse. I once got stuck in my Volvo going up a hill, I had nothing else left to try so I lowered the tyre pressures, result was, it was worse, I now wasn't just wiggling side to side but was sat in one spot, wouldn't personally bother doing it to a car. What I would do is carry some old carpet or mats in the boot to throw under the wheels when you do get stuck, which you will at some point in a RWD.

It's very rare that you'd need to use 2nd, usually 1st and no throttle does the job, it's best to drive on fresh stuff on a hill too, the compacted snow is more slippery, or have 2 wheels on the compacted and mount the verge with 2, often the grass/mud under is frozen solid and lumpy and so gives a good grippy surface under the snow, got me up plenty of hills. Lastly, don't reverse, the gearing is so low that it's very hard not to spin up.

My 5 was fine today when I rescued it from the slight incline it got stuck on a couple of days ago due to ice. Someone had inscribed 'cock' in the frost on the window though.

It can help to switch off the traction control/DSC when moving the car at very low speed on snow - as it [the car] tends to feel a slight slip (duh !) and take the power away making it difficult to pull away, or if you are trying to do donuts in a car park.

Obviously switch it straight back on once you are moving.

Switchable autos are handy letting you pick the gear to drive in, although you do have to put mine into 'sport' to access the manual gear changing. Putting mine into sport drops a gear and gives a more feisty throttle response. Not that handy in snow.

lowering the tyre pressure can help on cars with wide tyres.. the idea being that you have two ways of getting traction on snow/ice, float over it or cut through it.

if you have thin tyres with aggressive tread you can try to cut down through the slick stuff to get grip

with wide tyres or ones that don't have a cutting tread you have to float over the top of the ice by applying less power than it takes to spin the wheels, low tyre pressure in that situation can help because you have a bigger contact patch, however as soon as you spin up the wheels you're still not going anywhere

i've just got in from a gig in town and seriously if you're stuck for what to get someone for christmas every layby and bus stop between birmingham centre and my house is crammed with abandoned BMWs Smile

Interesting - I've definitely found it works pretty well on mud in my van; but then that's got quite fat profiled tyres.
I can see with really low profile tyres it causing some issues maybe, but not sure about the rest. I though it helped in my BMW, but can't really be too sure.

Similarly; interested to hear where the 'down to 10 psi' quote above comes from? Not criticising as I have no idea myself and have wondered how low I can go - on a bike I know what I can do with different setups from various off-roading.
