Hi everyone,

I've not been out on my bike for about 4 weeks due to the freezing weather we've had! It's currently in the garage but has no coolant in the radiator, only water (quick summary of why: radiator cracked, all coolant leaked, radweld used to seal it hole, filled up with water as no access to coolant at the time).

Will my bike be ok? I don't want to radio to expand/crack again or anything. We've had lower than -10 degrees but it this never occurred to me until the other day... Rolling Eyes

Thanks,
Steven

No, put some antifreeze in there. Usual mix is 50:50. Having said that, if it's already frozen the damage could well be done.

If its not frozen already, drain it completley and either put antifreeze in or leave it dry, just don't forget when spring comes

Put some anti-freeze in as soon as. Not just for the anti-freeze-ness, but also the corrosion inhibition. Thumbs Up

If you drain it and leave it dry, put a piece of red tape over the ignition, then you won't forget.

I was hoping the garage would've gave it some protection for the cold. I think I'll go drain it now to be safe Shocked

can't help but think the -8 last night will have annoyed it, if it's a heated garage you're fine

Hi

Empty will be fine, but just water will cause a problem (if it hasn't done already).

While the garage will provide some protection it will be minimal. And it has been cold enough to freeze bottles of coke left in the car.

All the best

Keith

I'll sort it out tomorrow if I have time. It's too cold and I don't have time at the moment to strip the faring down and drain the water.

What sort of damage could it have caused?

Crack the rad, split pipes, blow engine coolant plugs and expanding ice in engine water ways cracking the casings and meaning completely scraped engine.

If you don't have time, make time. My brick garage has been cold enough for ice and snow on the car from yesterday to stay frozen till today.

My only hope is that there is still some coolant left in it. I didn't drain it completely before, it was just what had leaked out the cracked radiator that I lost. Then I just topped it up with water afterwords. I suppose if there's any damage it will have been done my now! I've thrown a cover over it just now anyway to try and insulate it a wee bit.

When would you recommend stating it to see if it's ok? A day that it is above 0 degrees I guess?

just go and pour some coolant in it, you'll need to run it to push it around the system though... either way it's going to be expensive if you don't

Hi

If it has frozen then doesn't really matter when you start it. The engine will likely already be wrecked.

Should be easy to get at a drain point on the system. Hopefully without taking the fairing off. Stick a washing up bowl under it and drain it.

All the best

Keith

If you have a bottle of water in your garage and it hasn't frozen over the same period you have had the bike in then you will be ok. Many things in garages don't freeze up that would freeze outside. I doubt that you have done any damage to your engine yet, but I would drain the engine and put some anti freeze in it now though.
Don't forget that you need to fill the rad, then turn the engine on and fill it some more, just to get the air locks out.
Let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up
