After selling the B1 I had limited funds so picked up a 1999 R1
19k miles, full service history - with one being done recently, 2nd owner.

£1800

The guy before 'tried' to tart it up, with manky anodized stuff.
So far Ive changed the levers back to black, the Gheybow screen is now black - bobbins will go back to black.
The tank was done really badly with some sort of chunky glitter, this wasnt mentioned in the auction but I had spent 4 hours traveling, so still took it.
Hopefully for the summer the whole bike will be with new fairings, am unsure which to choose at the moment - there are a few fairing sets on fleebay!
Rides well, the power is amazing Thumbs Up Im a lot lower on this then the B1, But I will get used to it.
Will get better pics as the weather clears up, these were from the auction.

Yeah its pretty much going back to standard.. all the decal shyte its removable. Most R1's were going for around 2300 still with that sort of milage. Id rather have a bike for the road and get it back to looking nice in my own time Thumbs Up

Looks like you got a cracker of a bike for the money. The fact it needs a bit of cosmetic work just means you have an excuse to get it looking the way you want it Smile

They have more midrange than the newer R1's.

Good price but someone has made a right mess of it, to think it used to look like this Sad Good call on putting it back to what it should look like Thumbs Up

Yeah they have put shitty parts on it, but most of the anodized stuff is off now.
Unsure if ill go back to the original red/white - I was liking the Rossi rep fairings in blue - Im still unsure tho Embarassed
The one thing that is going for sure is the rear shotgun lights.
Dislike them - I have two options, one is a light like the rear of my B1H or a rounded one which looks neat too Thumbs Up
Oh and the pipe as well, that will be to the normal height with a moto gp can, but thats for summer if I have the funds Thumbs Up

Race reps don't age well and hurt resale value as they look crash repaired.
I actually like the red & white anyway. I spose you could go for an R7 style paint job:

When i get a new bike i usually spend a while restoring it all back to original before i then change what i want. You need to have a benchmark to check against especially with things like suspension. So many bikes i've had where the rear as been too high / low / soft / hard. I put it back to factory settings and usually things improve massively. Sometimes they get much worse and you find things have been changed to hide or compensate for a problem, but it's best to find out i think!

If i were you i'd give the thing a very careful going over once you've taken the fairings off. Mostly just for the peace of mind that you know everything is alright under there and that the new fairings can stay on a while Laughing

Im waiting for the bitterness to go away for a while before I strip.
First things will be the breaks, as there starting to bind with the salt/crap from the roads (same trouble with the B1)
Then get into the sprocket area to clean the crud.
Im looking at a few fairings, and cant choose!!!
I have a few friends who have brought these farings from Ebay and they look fine on the bike!

And the two lights im looking at.

Yeah the YZF sticker is a bit retro 90's superbike looking but I love it. But I love the look of most 90's sportsbikes and their dodgy colour schemes Very Happy

Louise when it comes to taking the bike apart if you find anything you are not sure of let me know and I'll see if I can help.

I've had my 4XV in pieces more times than I can count and am rebuilding my 5jj (pretty much the same as the 4xv) from the ground up at the moment. It's safe to say that any problems you find I've already been there and got oil on the t-shirt Rolling Eyes

Good luck with her though, they are great bikes Thumbs Up

If you do go for that Chinese fairing be prepared to drill new mounting points and for it to not line up perfectly. My friend bought some for his R6 and it was never perfect, no matter what he done with it.

I bought a mismatched set of original fairings for £50 on ebay and after a quick spray up they were as good as new. At least you know the fit is going to be perfect. You can spray up your own design or buy a vinyl wrap for something a bit different Karma
