Clutch cable snapped...

Great, the bloody clutch cable snapped on my way to my cousins house, I got stuck about 5 miles from home, had to crunch the bugger through the gears.... Not a good evening. Luckily everything should be open again tomorrow and hopefully I can get a new cable!

I hope......

What's the best way to maintain the cable, when I get it replaced?

You need to learn how to do clutchless gear changes.
make sure you lube the cable and adjust it when required.

Replace it yourself, its an easy enough job. Oil the cable first and dont be so hard on the clutch.

I went through 2 GSXR750 clutch cables due to constant use around town to and from work. Not fun. Glad I now have hydraulic clutch

It can be done. But as said above, Touch and go with stalling or moving. Not good for the clutch either I hear. I managed to limp home the few miles when mine broke.

Clutch cable is an easy swap. If you can't get one to fit straight away, you can try an emergency cable kit that'll let you bodge up a new inner until you can get a replacement.

This is the Mito that you swapped your shagged out CBR for, right? Well, karma certainly has a sense of humour.

Try and plan your route so that you stop as little as possible. If you do have to stop either. If you have to stall, do it on a hill.

Get the bike into neutral, with the killswitch to the off position. once rolling at a fast speed, click it into first and turn the killswitch on with the ignition turned on.

after that you're sorted.

If safe to then consider running a red light. The most important thing is your safety. Many junctions are not safe to even consider doing this. Normally left turns are safe, provided you can see that there is nothing coming. Closed junction left turns could be dangerous.

Or you could always just make sure the cable is well lubed. Always keep a spare clutch cable in your garage.

Buy two cables. Tape them together, cover the two ends of one of them with duct tape to protect the inner from the weather.

Feed them both through the frame, engine and handlebars as you would a single cable. Connect the uncovered cable and now you have a spare already in place if it ever happens again. It''l now only take moments to swap the ends over once you have removed the duct tape.

I thought you werent meant to lube the nylon lined cables as it makes them swell up?

I find the cables normally snap at the lever end where the build up of crap eats through the cable.

I`m a great believer in buying 2,1 for now,1 for a spare.When setting of for the day,in My case,up in the Dales,I always chuck a few spare bits in My rucksack.
Its not happend to Me yet,but can You amagine how smug You would feel if You were out with Your mates,cable goes,You park up with Your Pals saying "Or thats fucked things up hasnt it ",and You just pop one out your bag,bang it on,then tare of popping a wheelie with a big bastard smile on your face,,,,

I found when fitting new handlebars, that i basically knickered all the cables up and it cost 2/300 quid and still no bike for 2 months ... and i still don't know the difference between diesel and petrol ....

However i do have colourful dustcaps that tell me when the pressure is low, and in my pocket are some flourescent wheel rim tape ...

It shall be a happy new year when i get my bike back to break something else ....

I have 2 spare zx6r ones here now thanks to an ebay muck up.. feels good t have backup. Horrible thing to snap mid ride!

Good luck getting cables for it. Have a look in the back of motorcycle mechanics magazine, there could be a place that will make up cables for you for a reasonable price.

Last time I looked at the price of cables for an obscure cagiva they were about £30 each, with a 6 week wait to get them.

I've had three Laverdas and they're notorious for busting clutch cables.The answer I found was that at least once a year remover the cable from the handlebar lever, bodge a good blob of grease in the hole where the barrel on the end of the cable fits in and then re-assemble. These cables almost always break at the first 2/3mm from the nipple usually because the barrel nipple isn't free to turn in the lever hence fatigue sets in and 'pop' goes your cable.

A reccomendation here to venhill, they do made to measure lines, send em your old and theyll make a new and uprated one for you at a decent price and fast delivery, can change the colour outer case of the cable with no price difference!

Ah, the bugger went again.....

I've ordered a new one though with purple hosing.
It's coming up to the new year, and once it hits new year I'm going to set about re-spraying the bike.
It's going to be beautiful.
