Recently had my stolen Aprilia SR50 recovered and as expected it has not returned in the best of shape. The steering lock no longer works and the ignition barrel has also taken a battering and now no longer works as it should. Dad seems to think it's had a screwdriver or something forced into it to start the bike, however now when i turn the bike on my electric start is being really temperamental and only occasionally works, i've just read something about how much power is required to do this and i think i have half a hunch that it's something to do with the battery. I also have real problems with the electrics, when the bike is turned on it normally reads around 14v on the electronic gauge but when one of the electric instruments are on, such as the indicators and the brake light the bike majorly looses power down to around 7v (so much so that the actually back-light on the electric guage is unreadable in the dark) I'm not sure whether it can be fixed without being taken into a garage but hopefully someone has some idea what might be wrong, thanks for reading any advice would be great, Luke

1st bit of advice.... This forum has a workshop section designed just for this type of thing....

I'm assuming when you say 14V that is with the engine running. If not then check the zero on the meter. You should be seeing less than 13V on a std battery and only 14V if the engine is running.
I would also guess your bike runs total loss system as such it needs the engine running to power any eletrics such as lights etc.

Could well be that they have fucked the battery when they stole the bike.
Fix the switches, change the battery and all should be OK.

Did just realise the workshop part after I'd posted, my mistake.

Also it's at around 14v when engine running, 10.5v when ignition is on, then drops to 7v the second any electric device is switched on, bback-light cuts out at anything under 9v.

Laughing use a computer whilst being homeless, my car just charges the phone...being a shit iPhone doesn't help either...

A block of text is impossible to read, even I can format text, and I'm on a phone.

But judging by replies... Your ped has a crap battery. Do an insurance claim if you want, but check your renewal quote with a claim. Mines currently bordering on needing to do a bank robbery.

I did ask my insurance company if they'd pay out but after the hassle I had during it being stolen i decided against it, was stolen in september 2010, says a lot considering they hadn't hade any sort of payment even once the police rang to say it had been recovered on 16th December!

And yes, I'm only 16 and I'm trying to keep hold of my no claims bonus incase I decide to move up to a 125 or buy a car.

Thanks for the advice though all of you.

If you have a battery charger try charging it up. Sounds like its been run down.
As it should read 12V with ignition on, but no load.

If it then goes the same way its the battery that has passed its best.

Could also be if its been stood in the cold weather, as sub zero can hammer a battery.

Don't think you can add bike no claims to a car policy, but will help with 125 and bigger.

But... You do have to declare all insurance claims, car or bike.. On either policy. Which is silly... Should be able to mix NCB! Sad

Think we may actually have one, will give that a try.

Also, what would you suggest would be causing my electric start to choke, when it doesn't work it makes a groaning sound as if its trying to start but something isn't just clicking. Sort of the same sound when a car wont start but it sounds more like churning...?

Not enough power in the battery.

It takes a lot out of a battery to not only turn the engine over, but also to power the plug to spark the engine. If your is dropping to 7V with just a light on, then its not got enough juice to turn the starter, let alone spark the plug.

You could hook it upto a car battery and jump start it.

Or bump start it.
Put it in 2nd gear and push the bike with the clutch in, then release the clutch to start.....
Just remember to pull the clutch back in as soon as it fires up if you are not sat on the bike or it will be off on its own Shocked

Sorry if you already know how to do that, but many people don't Karma

Yeah it's not a geared bike, will try charging the battery tomorrow and see how that works, nice one for the advice though all of you.

Well, just to sum up, give it a full charge.
Should register roughly 12.2 > 12.8 I think, anything after a full cahrge around there is alright??

When its on the bike, turn ignition on, if your lights come on at the same time then that may draw some current...but it should remain the same if not.

When you crank it over it should start if the bikes not busted in any way, if it does when its running, you should see 14v~

If its working fine then all you needed was a recharge, if the battery starts giving up again, its on its way out. Thumbs Up

Hope you fix it.
