Hi all. Following our all-singing, all-dancing, all-exploding tour of Scotland by flaming suzuki we're planning next year. Somehow, we've ended up planning two holidays

We're looking at Germany for the start of the school holidays, end of July/start of August. Sailing from Hull to Rotterdam and then... well, who knows?

Who's been to Germany? Where's good to go, what's good to look at? We're probably going for seven nights, including crossings, so five days touring including a rest day somewhere. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated as neither of us has been there before - just not the Nurburgring.

I enjoyed exploring down the Rhine valley, then through the Black forest.
Southern Germany is much like nearby Switzerland and Austria, very scenic.

The south of Germany is very nice bavaria etc, the north is quite plain and spread out, though the architecture of the old towns is quite nice. Its obviously where the big citites are like Hamburg and Berlin.

The bavarin hills and mounting are beautiful but its a bit of an extra trek.

Black forest. Highly recommended. ride the B500. Black forest High Road. Bloody Marvellous.

If you head for the Tyrol after, you won't go wrong. Fuel is cheaper in Austria. And there you have the Grossglockner and Nockhalmstrasse. both: fantastic 'private' roads.

If time allows pop over to the Dolomites. which are next door.

Sooner or later opinions fade and the name on the tank matters not. I think that happens somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear. Enjoy the ride... everything else takes care of itself.

Well, im currently living in southern germany - bavaria. right near the castle from chitty chitty bang bang.

Roads are fantastic, scenery is fantastic... Food + Beer is 100x better than england!

What do you consider a good daily mileage? Personally, with just two day traveling I'd aim for somewhere around Cochem on the first day and then either follow the river Moselle towards Luxembourg or ride towards Boppard and follow the Rhein.

Yes can't disagree with the Black Forest, very nice & not too far. But as someone else has mentioned, the Dolomites are not so far, and there are some blinding roads. Best day's biking I've ever done around Passo di Sella, Campolongo etc. Recommended.

i'm living in berlin currently and a mate stopped off in the harz mountains at the end of the summer on his way over to visit me.. sounded great.. would like to make it there myself in 2011. the hotel is run by an english guy who's been living in germany for years. safe travels.

Another suggestion as time is limited. head for Luxembourg which is cheap.. and from there you have rather a lot of choices close by.. with a lot of very nice roads. And places to visit: Bitburg and Trier are both worthwhile not to mention the Nurburgring.

We have travelled down through the Black Forest to Austria and also across to Berlin via Mohnessee (dam the Dambusters blew up).

Both trips we thoroughly enjoyed opurselves, Black Forest - some brilliant roads and plenty of campsites along the Mosel, Berlin a city with lots to see if you are interested in history.

Cochem is to be recommended, near the Ring, on the Mosel and beautiful scenery.

Germany can be whatever type of holiday you want it to be, all you have to do is work out what you want to do and plan accordingly.

Another vote for the Black Forest, did it on a Beemer 100 over 25 years ago, great scenery, roads, food & drink.

It's a very biker friendly place too.
In fact most people at least outside the big towns seem very polite and friendly - like genuinely interested in where you are going, and eager to suggest good places to visit and problems to avoid.

I arrived in a small place somewhere near Lake Constance, later than planned and it was almost dark.
I asked some 'chavvy' scooter boys hanging around outside the shops if there was a campsite nearby and they insisted on riding ahead to lead me too it.
It was only half a mile but a nice thing to do.
It was hard to find as it was down a small lane but right on the water's edge, with stunning views across to the Swiss mountains next morning.

Agreed with Pheonix, I always find when touring the days disappear fast, with 5 days you are cutting it fine.

I find Germany a bit dull, its the most like england of anywhere i've been in europe, and the weather has never been kind to me there.

I went down to strasbourg one year and then through the black forest, it is nice. Southern Germany is much better than northern imo.

Nothern Germany is alright if its sunny, the road from belguim to the nurburgring was great, if you're into that sort of thing you could quite easily kill 5 days just going to the ring and back and touring belguim/amsterdam or a bit of france.

Thanks all; lots of food for thought. We've got six months or so to plan it, and a trip to Scotland before hand, but I reckon Nuremberg and the Black Forest is looking like a good bet.

Think you mean Nurberg as Nuremberg is over 200 miles away from the Ring and is near the border of the Czech Republic.

Sorry, must admit I toyed with the idea of going to nuremberg in 2009, but my plans were altered somewhat when it was decided I wasn't going alone.

wherever you go you will enjoy it, just take loads of pics and do a good write up when you get back

Another vote for Cochem. Just follow the Mosel and you can't go wrong. Plenty of hairpin practice too!
