Urgent problem - car (sorry) hydraulic clutch.

Friend's car is stuck outside my place - he parked up yesterday, and went to move off today and there's no resistance in the clutch at all, i.e. you put your foot down on it and it doesn't even return to it's original position when you lift your foot off, let alone allow you to get it into gear.

He had a similar problem about a month ago that we cured by just topping up the fluid - in that instance though, the pedal was returning to it's original position when your foot wasn't on it, even though it wouldn't go into gear.

If at all possible, we need to get this sorted tonight. Other than breakdown recovery, any ideas as to what the problem could be, or is the clutch just FUBAR'd?

Slave cylinder has probably got a leak if hes had to top up the fluid.
If you check the level in the reservoir is it low? You might get away with topping up the fluid and bleeding it.

clutch slave cylinder at a guess it depends on what car to how simple a fix
you could probally get away with refilling the resivor and rebleeding to get somewhere to get one
on fords its a big job on fiats its a 5 min job

Apparently he's tried topping up again and bleeding but no difference; we're going to have another crack at it now.

Honda Accord Aerodeck. Difficult to pinpoint the leak in the dark, though there's definitely a bit of a puddle underneath.

Keep trying to bleed it, slave cylinders can send even the calmest mechanic over the edge when it comes to bleeding at times.

i beleave the cylinder is on the outside on honda/rovers rather than in the belhousing like mondeos ect so its a simple job shouldnt cost much in parts

Hi

Another vote for the slave cylinder. However I would still expect the pedal to return (I would expect there to be a return spring in the master cylinder), so possibly the master cylinder or a popped hose.

have you actually lost any fluid or found any leaks?

It is possible also that the thrust bearing has pushed through the clutch spring plate,

If the master or slave are leaky it is definatly cheaper to buy a seal kit or used parts than buy new, just make sure the bores aren't scored.
