Hi-fi advice. A simple one.

Can I run two hi-fi's in to one set of speakers just by splicing the output wires together in a kind of long Y shape?

It makes sense that you could, the sound quality would be shit and if you had both running at the same time it would make a horrible noise and maybe even blow them.

The more importantly question is why would you want to?

I run two sets of speakers (kitchen & garden) off one hi-fi and swap between them using a 'three pole, double throw" toggle switch.

I assume you could do the reverse ?

Not really, I have 3 hi-fi's and 2 sets of speakers, my friend has my the one without the speakers in his shed (it has sofas and a telly etc...) but he doesn't have a set of speakers with it. I have two set up in my room because one of them is pretty crappy quality compared to the other, but the good quality one doesn't have and alarm clock.

So at the moment I use the bad one for a radio alarm clock and the good one for music. I was going to give my friend the speakers from the crappy one and wire the alarm hi-fi up to the other ones speakers.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Buy a better alarm clock and ditch the crap hifi. Will save your electrosparky and give you extra space.

As Chris said the output quality would likely suffer if you spliced them together, you need an audio input switcher, something like:

Its quite possible that you could damage the output stage in the amplifier of the other hifi if you played the music loud enough from the other. As said above, get a switcher.

Yes, just don't power them both on at the same time.

I would get a switchbox personally to avoid accidental use of them both.
