At £8.99 I would say yes, it is worth a shot.

It does depend on how sensitive they are, as if they keep going off then all it will end up as is a disc lock. Wink

just out of interest will these fit all bikes, or do you need to look out for specific widths?
I bought a cheapo disc lock from lidl and had to return it as it wouldnt fit on to my ped Embarassed

Measure from the holes in your disc to the outer edge of your brake disc.

Lost of different designs of disc lock available, I would reckon that aldi / lidl / netto ones are aimed for the average brake disc.

If it gets the bike next to yours nicked instead, then it's done its job.

I'd say no...

After having a bunch of heavy duty padlocks cut off my shed and rear gate last week, I've been looking at alarmed padlocks and many tend to go off for 10 seconds then stop if it isn't moved again

Cheapo padlock is pretty easy to cut off with hand held bolt croppers as the loop tends to be quite thin. The padlock will go off for 10 seconds when they crop it and it drops to the floor then stop.

Unless the loop is guarded with a shroud or something its gonna be easy to lop off and wheel your bike away.

10 seconds could be enough to notice someone is try to steal your bike. I'd rather have a 10 second alarm that nothing at all.

True better than nothing at all but if you trigger it yourself by accident whilst removing it with a key how many people do you think would come over to question what you are doing?

The lock would only be useful if combined with other forms of security such as a thick chain and armoured padlock or shackle locks can be quite good. By itself its only marginally more effective than not having anything at all, might scare the odd opportunitist scrote away.

Otherwise its snip, ring for 10 secs, wheel away, rather than

"shit its gonna take me 3 mins to get through this chain/lock then ive got to get through this alarmed padlock if it doesnt go off"

or if they try cut the alarm off first may think

"do i want to draw attention to myself so people can watch me try cut off an additional chain?"

It'd be ideal if the alarm doesnt stop ringing unless someone deactivates it but then that would piss people off if its triggered by the wind or something. Otherwise put your tenner towards something thats not so easily removed.

I'd probably say your money would be better going into something like this.

https://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/products_id/8776

Where are you gonna get a set of bolt croppers on it to snip the pin? Not saying that it wont stop your bike getting nicked but for the sake of 20quid will be a significantly tougher than an unarmoured padlock.

A guy on another forum recommended this one:
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ALARM-DISC-DISK-LOCK-DISCLOCK-MOTORCYCLE-MOTORBIKE-/220577449145?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item335b70c4b9

I bought it - it looks fine, but haven't had it long enough to know how it works in the wind etc yet. Looks like the same spec as that Hein Gericke one, only less money.

but yeah i get your point.. Alarmed Disclock and a decent chain is better than just a decent chain?

I dont think people will go out there way to look, but passers-by may glance (and hopefully call the plod) and if its quite a public place it may disuade the culprit more. At the end of the day, if they want it, they're going to have it, all we can do is deter and prolong them Very Happy by parking next to a more nickable bike Very Happy

Almaxing your bike full stop (through the frame to something immovable) will work well. Attacking Almax chains is abit much for the standard thief, especially during the daytime.

I would put either of my chains against an almax chain, to see which would be cut through first.

And yes I am serious.

1.5m Almax is fine for this on both the CG125 and the CB500, and likely other similar commuters. Probably not so good for plastic/faired sportsbikes where the frame is largely hidden.
