I got hold of a chinese(maybe) 7 inch Android tablet. It has OS 1.6 on it and it's painful! I'd like to attempt to upgarde it to 2.1, if that's possible.

Can anyone suggest a .apk that I can download that will tell me as much info about the hardware as possible before I brick it Exclamation

I plan to follow these guides https://www.taranfx.com/upgrade-android-2-1

Any advice would be good Karma I just want to upgrade the tablet so I have access to apps that are unavailable in OS 1.6, such as a decent PDF viewer, a .chm viewer and synchronization with my google mail contacts and calendar.

Cheers Thumbs Up

If you don't have any success then Tesco are selling the Storage Options Scroll 7" tablet for £103.

It has Android 2.1 on it but 2.2 is almost ready from here

No i understand but Android early versions were not designed for tablets, Google even say that so why are manufacturers still selling them with it.

I guess it would be too expensive to licence Windows for them.

My Advent Vega runs 2.2. As you say, Google state it is definitely not designed for tablets. Yet it runs flawlessly. Google are no better than M$. Follow the rules and you never get what you want.

3.0 leaked today though. Good news for everyone running Android that isn't designed for tabs... unless you do as Google say and buy a new tablet with it preinstalled Wink

As I said it's a cheap chinese machine, so no brand or model. I'm looking for a decent app in .apk form that will tell me exactly what hardware it finds so I can look for an upgrade with a hope of working Karma

I'm not entirely sure if this will help, but if you go to settings (menu button then Settings), scroll to the bottom and there should be a submenu called 'About Phone' or maybe 'About Device' in your case. Scroll to the bottom of this menu and it will say things like Model number, Baseband version, OEM Version and Build number.

If you type some of these into Google you might be able to find out a bit more about what's inside.

^ Yeah, but all that gives me is

memory: 256mb
model number: generic
firmware version: 1.6
kernal version: 2.6.29-00236.g4f8dbbb-dirty
build number: WMT2.12_88

I'm looking for something that'll give me a hint as to what branded machine it's closest to so I can follow the upgrade for that machine.
The tablet cost me £75, TBH if I'd seen the tesco one with 2.1 already on it I would have paid the extra £28.. Grrr

Thanks for the replies so far Thumbs Up

You could take the case apart and look on the board/chippery.

The Scroll tablet has only just dropped to £103 at Tesco. I bought mine just over a week ago and paid £132.

As far as apk's go, 'Quick System Info' should tell you what you need to know, provided that it's available on your device.
