Disc cloning/ghosting software?

I want to ghost a single drive, to fit a bigger drive in a laptop. Any suggestions on free software to perform this as a one-off?

Search for hirens CD.

Get a version 10 or before and use the ghost option in backup tools. (Ghost was removed in the later versions)

Its a bootable CD and strait forward to use.

Comes with many tools you might need one day or another..

I have just done exactly the same thing. I read about clonezilla and a few other free programmes but in the end just did it with Windows backup and restore.

I had 2 250GB disks in RAID 0 and swapped to two newer 500GB disks in RAID 0.

Start by opening windows backup restore (assuming you are using Windows 7 here btw)

Click on create image and back up your existing disk to an external hard drive.

If you dont have an external hard drive, then you can install your new disk and partition it so that there is a partition the same size as the currently USED space on your existing disk.

Back up hard disk to this and when it asks you to create a recovery disk, do it, dont skip and assume you can use the Windows 7 DVD because although it looks the same, it doesnt work for some reason and asks for the recovery DVD (I tried).

Remove the old disk and then boot from the recovery DVD. Follow the very easy steps on the screen and it will find the backup and restore the drive image to your new disk.

When you boot back to windows, you will have 2 hard drives showing. Just go into computer management (control panel->admin tools->computer management->disk management) and delete the partition and extend the main partition to use up all the space.

If you put your old hard drive in there and have them both running at the same time, you will get some errors as they both have the same ID code or something, an option will pop up asking you if you want to use them both at the same time, just click yes and it should work fine. It did for me.
