Hi guys.

At the moment I have a triumph reg/rec wired up to my CBR but it is physically larger than the original and so wont go in the same place.

I have somewhere eyed up to fit it but for the time being it is slotted in against the battery, it is pretty secure and the wires are well covered so no chance of a short, but is there a danger from the heat of it against the battery?

Just I am about to go give the bike a good clean and then I want to bolt the seat back down which means if anything goes wrong I won't have easy access.

Doesn't the reg-rec heatsink need bolting as a ground? The heat wouldn't bother me too much if it was just temporary, but somewhere with good airflow would be better.

Hadn't considered air flow Confused

To be honest the place I have planned for it isn't much better in terms of air flow, although there is far more space around it so at least the heat can move.

Find the best place to give it as much cooling airflow as you can, excess heat is the biggest killer of a reg/rec, they do get very hot and I wouldn't like to wedge one against the battery.
Some bikes have a crap location to start with, the early Blackbirds were forever giving up the ghost because of their position tucked up inside seat plastics, they came up with a revised larger finned one to help but some owners modified them by fixing a PC fan to theirs to push a bit of extra cooling air round them which did help a bit.

That's where it is on the CBR I have at the moment as standard.

The triumph one is much bigger than the standard one which I would hope means it keeps it cooler (by my logic at least)

I don't think the place I have planned will be too bad, but I need to solder about a foot of extra wire in and I can't do it at the moment.

Wire in a PC fan to it, some of them run on 12volts Thumbs Up

Personally I wouldn't want something that would get hot against my Battery.

Something like this,

https://www.maplin.co.uk/brushless-12vdc-axial-fans-1806?c=so&u=strat15
you should be able to connect it from where you joined the reg/rec to the system.

How is it working anyway?

My GS the reg/rec it attatched to the battery tray as standard and having no problems. If you are that worried extend all the wires and locate elsewhere.

This is why i wouldn't situate my reg/rec close to a lead/acid battery. It did last for 11 years.

A sealed battery? I'd still prefer to locate it on it's own, and in airflow.

TBH this probably wouldn't of happened if Ducati had used thicker gauge wire and the connectors maintained...But who maintains connector blocks Rolling Eyes ...I do now.

My new reg/rec is in the nose-cone and i've uprated the gauge of cable. So far so good.

Larger should mean cooler but it's only cooled by air circulation. I take it the battery is in a plastic tray? If so that won't help since the plastic won't conduct heat away too well. Best to move it to where there's some airflow. Is there no room in the side of the tailpiece?

Not where the standard one is, there is room further back but I don't have the bits to extend the wiring yet. I have two possible locations eyed up.

How badly affected will it be by road crap? There is a nice place above the wheel but it will get dirty. I would imagine it would be ok as the standard location on an NTV is just to the side of the swing arm and that is fine, but can anybody confirm?

The new type reg/recs don't get that hot really as they are mosfet.
If it is getting hot though, you could do as stated above and wire a fan to it. It's actually not that uncommon a mod.
Or... place it where it should go and fix it using only one bolt the best you can. Cable tie the other hole to something.

Or.. Find a good place, drill new holes/make plates and get the soldering iron out.

My plug from alternator end up looking like that too Howling Terror, that on a CBR600F?

C_Dug is your CBR a 600F also? If so, I have a pattern replacement in the garage somewhere that's a bit smaller than standard. You can have it if I can find it if the triumph one is a little big.

Yep mines a 600F and my connector also looked similar, although it was salvageable which made connecting the triumph one a whole lot easier Thumbs Up

Not sure how hot the new one gets to be honest, how long would it take to heat up?

I thought I was getting reg/rec issues on my 600F but turned out to be one of the wires from alternator had corroded through and snapped at that connector.
