New RAM PC Won't Boot.

Hi guys.

I recently purchased 4gb 2x2gb sticks off of ebay for 11 quid. The sticks were brand new HP ones still in their original packaging.

They're DDR2 PC 5300 just like two single 1gb sticks that were in my computer before. It did mention something about server memory but surely this shouldn't be an issue?

Anyway, with either of the two new ram sticks in either slot or both nothing appears on my monitor. The computer will turn on but the monitor will act as if the computer is off. I have tried running each stick on it's own in both of the slots too but no luck. My computer boots up fine once I put one of my old sticks back in.

I was wondering if you had any ideas. Surely both new ram sticks shouldn't be bad?

I've checked my motherboard book and it says the board supports up to 8gb RAM.

Server RAM is different and will only work on a server motherboard.

Also keep in mind that specific speed ram, usually the slow stuff often sells for more as people tend to think they need a specific speed. However provided the RAM is faster than you currently have, or faster than your board can take it will get clocked down.

E.g. someone has PC5300 and wants more ram. They look for it on ebay and find not much of it as everyone uses 6400. As a result they pay over the odds, when they could have bought 6400 and potentially had faster ram, or had the system clock it down to 5300.

Server RAM is usually ECC. PCs usually want non-ECC RAM.

But then when you get a DDR3 motherboard, are you really going to be PC8500?
You're going to get the faster stuff. I think my DDR3 was about £70 for 4GB a year ago. The board is AM2+ i think so it will support all the fancy CPU's already
