Hi guys.

I don't want to pay the earth for it but I would like it to jack the bike up quite high.

thanks Thumbs Up

Budget?

If you can stretch to it, the 'scissor' style stands go really high and pretty stable - though do weigh a bit.

Get one that goes low - My stand fits my other dirtbikes but doesn't slide under the XR without me lifting it on.....which kind of defeats the object!

Pah, lots of motocross stands don't have a 'lift' element at all, you just tilt the bike a bit slot it under and lift it back up to vertical Smile.

Rolling Eyes
1) Place stand against bike
2) Tilt bike away from (thereby 'exposing' more of the underside of the bike)
3) Kick stand under bike
4) Tilt bike back and onto stand
5) Press foot down on the stand lift mechanism.
6) Work on bike

I have one of these ... pretty standard and cheap (£25)
It has 'fitted' every bike I have owned and others:
XR250 Rolling Eyes
WR400
KTM EXCF
GasGas Pampera
WR450
KDX250

It won't lift 'really high', however. There are many of them on ebay if you search for (motocross, bike) (stand, lift) or something similar.

I think its a generic make ... so just search for 'mx stand' or 'bike stand'.

I got mine from my local mx shop.
But here is one on ebay thats an ok price:

Only on BCF could it go from "what mx stand should I get" ... to "stop sticking your nose up Tobys arse / sucking off Blue (in your case) ".

That pic is exactly the type I just got (IIRC its handled by "Bike It")

On the plus side
They are very cheap and seem robust enough as long as you get the bike to sit nicely

Downsides (as pointed out)
Don't lift very high - but certainly enough to get one wheel clean off the ground to get the "lifted" wheel off

Its quite tall in its lowest position
(means I have to lift the DR250 onto it in the first place, using the side stand method as described- which took a bit of rocking and huffing to get it to sit squarely- see above point)

I was considering trying to take a cm of so off it height wise when dropped by cutting the tubes down to make insertion easier, but without measuring I wouldn't be sure it would defeat the object of owning it

Kind of wishing I had bought the scissor type now
(Someone at work very kindly mentioned a place selling them locally at £35 - as soon as I had picked this one up for the same money...doh!)

Will try and get the name of the place (its one of those warehouse jobbies you need to be a member of- but membership is free IIRC)
Makro? Costco?

Regards
Rob

You can also get some with a hydraulic damper bit for lowering it smoothly. Just annoys me, but it does have a high adjustable platform, so you can set it to just the right height, which is handy.

I've got two, one like is pictured above, and a cheap one I bought recently, like this:

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/images/vehicle_1263.JPG

This one's cheap, I think £26 off eBay including postage. But the mechanism means that the leverage is very poor, and you often have to take some weight off it in order for you to start lifting it. Which is useless. I tend to only use it for my pitbike now.

My other one, like this:
https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/images/vehicle_514.JPG
is still cheap, but works much better. (Probably doesn't lift quite as high though).

Been told its Makro that have the scissor stands, though not showing on their website, nor listed

Also been thinking about my stand - and chopping it down
had a bit of a Doh! moment- as it would not make a bit of difference ref the fully raised height - it would stay exactly the same regardless of cutting the outer tubes

all it would alter is its lowest position - so exactly what I want to do!

(as long as theres enough tube inside to support and keep the thing stable ish - will check to see what overlap it currently has on its elevated position )

Assuming loosing 1cm or so from the outer tubes leaves 'a bit' of overlap I'm going to lop it with the angry grinder, I'm pretty sure that is all it would need to be able to just slide under with the bike just tilted against the side stand

If all else fails I'll borrow a mates card and pop into Makro
...and yes I am a whimp not being able to manhandle my tiny lightweight DR onto it

Regards
Rob

It may make it harder to lift initially - as the lever will probably then be near vertical, so may need to be pushed more horizontally than down to get it going. Suppose you could always stick the cut-off hoops back over if it was a problem as 'stops'.

You may have a point there G ref the leverage

Had a look at it tonight and theres plenty of overlap on the uprights and loosing a cm or so would not make it any more unstable at its highest and would be perfectly safe I'd say

As you rightly say - I could always put it back in if it were to cause leverage issues

Anyway found a reference to the Makro stands at "not much money" - with a picture
They look the dogs danglies, and I may just end up with one anyway

Those Makro stands do look handy and seem good value for money. The downside though is that they are fairly heavy and very bulky so could present a bit of a storage problem when not in use. I've got a couple of stands similar to the ones that G described and they are brilliant. The platform height is adjustable and the lift height is about 5'' which is plenty enough for my purposes. I use these stands as parking places for two of my bikes (they take up less space whilst upright) but if I was not using them then they would not present a storage problem as they aren't much bigger than a toaster.

This is a bike it one, very stable, also very heavy though. I highly recommend it though comes to a nice height for working, means i can sit down to do a lot of jobs.
Think it was £75

I also have one of the smaller lift ones, but only use that for small jobs now.
