I woulds like to be able to clean my bike in my garage but I have no mains electric in there and my house is too far from the garage to run an extension.

Solar powered lighting is not an option as installation would leave the solar panel open for vandalism.
Generator is too expensive, noisey and smelly

So what about led track lighting?
Adjustable 12 LED Track Light
https://www.maplin.co.uk/adjustable-12-led-track-light-389501?c=froogle&u=389501&t=module

If I bought 2 of these would they produce enough light to be viable?

All positive comments are appreciated.

Thanks

Clean the bike outside? You really want a wet garage floor?

But no.. I wouldn't say they were too bright. Nowhere near what you would like!

Get a small geni like I did. cost about £100 from Aldi/lidl. Ideal for lights and a few tools. I run two florries, a food light and still have enough for a couple of power tools.

Friend of mine tried to light up his loft with the 24 LED magnetic lights from Maplin, they were worse than crap. It's like switching on a dull torch. Think a jenny is your best bet, or get a shed for the garden/yard and keep the bike there.

I wouldn't worry about the noise as you'll only be using it for like an hour on the weekend right? Really wouldn't recommend running it inside the garage, even if you knock the garage wall through and make an exhaust because the monoxide could be lethal. If you kept the garage door open you should be ok, and it would abate the noise a little, but I would get a monoxide tester/alarm if you go down this route.

A small generator is the best plan.
It will be useful in the occasional power cut too.
First one on google / another

I suppose you could run a small invertor off the bike battery for a few minutes.

My genni does make a noise, but no more than running a bike engine or petrol mower, You could insulate the genni in a sound proof box leaving space for air to get in and exhaust to get out.

led lights dont seem to have as good a spread of light as normal type bulbs, what about a small leasure battery and a couple of 12v caravan strip lights (flourescents)?
you could take the battery home once a month or so to charge it as it would last ages just running the small lights

Run a 6mm 3 core swa from your house db, then just fire up a 2 way rcd protected garage fuseboard. Run a double socket off a 16a breaker.

Not entirely sure what this means, but I'll assume it means get your 'leccy wired into the garage, in which case I will say;

+1!

How far from your house is your garage? Obviously if it's a rented council garage that isn't directly at the bottom of your garden ect, then you can't really do this.

How about getting a car battery and a 12Vdc - 240Vac inverter. You can then run a couple of 5 foot flourescents (cheap from B&Q) and have plenty of light. Just take the battery back to the house to recharge when done.

We do this, apart from the inverter.

At the moment we have just 1 as we are in the process of making the workbench, fitting carpet and shelves and stuff but it is bright enough to see what you are doing at night. It seems dim at first but you get used to it and the bulbs are about 10 years old Laughing

Battery was £15 so me and father went halfs and the light was from a garage when he was younger so £7.50 and ive got a nightlight.

If there is work to be done though, I do it during the day as its too cold and I cant really see but atm its just for seeing what Im doing when putting the bike away and that.

I've got a bunch of LED spotlights in my garage, running off a 12v power supply. And for those who suggest running a line from my flat, it's 11 floors up, and about 40 yards away, so it's not really viable.
The led lights work OK, but i'm photophobic, so I can see very well in low light levels. I can't say that I'd recommend it for anyone with normal eyes: it's just too dim.

I'm genuinely considering a generator at this point.

Piss easy, just break into the meter room at the bottom of your block, tap off the landlords supply. Ofcourse I don't condone any illegal activity.

Anyone to shed some light on this matter? Can we mathmatically work this out?

A leasure battery would last longer really, A car battery is made for supplying lots of amps for a short time

Get yourself a small Egyptian boy with a mirror. As you're cleaning your bike, you get to shout "Aziz! Light!" alot.
