My new 'Nitro' RC Heli - er

I have flown fixed wing RC nitro for years on and off, never really fancied a heli until lately - probably due to having a couple of those little electric indoor jobs.

Anyhoo, I decided to take the next step and buy myself a 'proper' Nitro heli

Today was its maiden flight ... they are notoriously hard to fly and I realised I really had very little idea ... so there was a high probability of 'fail' I recorded the event for prosperity ...

.. and here are my tentative first flights (sorry the heli is a bit of a 'dot' but the wide angle lens of the GoPro makes it do that - and I didn't want to get TOO close!!).

Anyone know how to fly these things?!??! - it seemed VERY 'twitchy' ... perhaps I need to set the 'rates'?

Why not use RC Heli simulation software to get to grips with the controls before taking it out....and destroying it.

Pabbers has got a £250 electric jobby, full 3D or something, it gets off the ground and crashes immediately because it's like trying to control two chimps playing football in a hammock. It got busted quite soon and has been on a shelf collecting dust for the last three years.

My 4ch micro is the same, £150's worth of crap. I bought a £30 3ch (contra-rotors) and can fly that around the kitchen all day long.

I really really advise getting a flight simulator for your PC, shit loads of practice and you'll get it. I'm guessing you know all of the controls? The hardest thing to grasp with em is the fact that some of the controls are reversed when you are facing yourself...

Used to fly a Concept 30 a long time ago. It is somewhere in the shed in a box.
Looking at one of the new T-Rex range for the summer. It is easier if you haven't flown fixed wings first. you do need to be bold when starting off, get it in the air then start trying to fly it. need space too.

Oh another thing, you need to be at least 4/5 foot off the ground to be out of ground effect, otherwise you'll never be able to keep it hovering.

Well, I have got the epoxy and duck tape out to fix the broken receiver/battery tray and canopy ... I'll patch it back up and give it another crack ... need to make a new set of training legs too as they snapped in the crash!!

I clearly wasn't 100% in control at the point and 'fighting' it ... but not 100% sure what went wrong to be honest ... it just kind of tied itself up and fell out of the sky!!

Interesting point Skudd, clearly there are differences, but I thought my Fixed Wing experience would put me in good stead ... what makes you say it is detrimental?

I was told that at a flying club many years ago when i was doing then research when i first got a heli. it has been repeated many times over. i have never flown fixed wings and found Helis easy to do so thought that it must be true.

When learning how to fly keep it close to you the last one was too far away from you for stating off. Don't run after it, bring it back to you. learn to hover first, then point it in different directions, then backwads, side to side and forwards. then in a circle then figure of eight. Then expand your flight. It looked like you were up in the air then went fix wing mode.

#1 tip...if things go pear-shaped, cut the throttle. The blades hitting stuff while under power is what does most of the damage with these things.

If you chop the throttle on a proper RC heli there's a very good chance that when it comes to ground the blades will strike the tailboom and both will be destroyed.

I've got a Blade MSR to practise with before getting a bigger one. It has all the functions of a bigger one but is mainly for indoor flying. I've also got Phoenix flight Sim and have a play on that a fair bit. Watching those vids has convinced me to stay with the sim for a bit!
