PostPosted: 12:38 - 12 Feb 2011    Post subject: My new 'Nitro' RC Heli - er Reply with quote

I have flown fixed wing RC nitro for years on and off, never really fancied a heli until lately - probably due to having a couple of those little electric indoor jobs.

Anyhoo, I decided to take the next step and buy myself a 'proper' Nitro heli Cool

Today was its maiden flight ... they are notoriously hard to fly and I realised I really had very little idea ... so there was a high probability of 'fail' I recorded the event for prosperity ...

.. and here are my tentative first flights (sorry the heli is a bit of a 'dot' but the wide angle lens of the GoPro makes it do that - and I didn't want to get TOO close!!).

Flight 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvW5jM4OXBk&hd=1

Flight 2 - getting a bit braver
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBh1OUA_Gac&hd=1

Flight 3 ....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si5C4DwFp0Y&hd=1

Erm ... ah ... Embarassed

Anyone know how to fly these things?!??! - it seemed VERY 'twitchy' ... perhaps I need to set the 'rates'?

Why not use RC Heli simulation software to get to grips with the controls before taking it out....and destroying it. Laughing

Pabbers has got a £250 electric jobby, full 3D or something, it gets off the ground and crashes immediately because it's like trying to control two chimps playing football in a hammock. It got busted quite soon and has been on a shelf collecting dust for the last three years.

My 4ch micro is the same, £150's worth of crap. I bought a £30 3ch (contra-rotors) and can fly that around the kitchen all day long.

Coz I haven't got one?!!? Very Happy ... I had a crack on an RC plane simulator a few (~15 Confused) years back and thought it was cack! .. they might be better these days though?

I really really advise getting a flight simulator for your PC, shit loads of practice and you'll get it. I'm guessing you know all of the controls? The hardest thing to grasp with em is the fact that some of the controls are reversed when you are facing yourself...

Used to fly a Concept 30 a long time ago. It is somewhere in the shed in a box.
Looking at one of the new T-Rex range for the summer. It is easier if you haven't flown fixed wings first. you do need to be bold when starting off, get it in the air then start trying to fly it. need space too.

Oh another thing, you need to be at least 4/5 foot off the ground to be out of ground effect, otherwise you'll never be able to keep it hovering.

Well, I have got the epoxy and duck tape out to fix the broken receiver/battery tray and canopy ... I'll patch it back up and give it another crack ... need to make a new set of training legs too as they snapped in the crash!! Embarassed

I clearly wasn't 100% in control at the point and 'fighting' it ... but not 100% sure what went wrong to be honest ... it just kind of tied itself up and fell out of the sky!! Confused

Watch again ...

Interesting point Skudd, clearly there are differences, but I thought my Fixed Wing experience would put me in good stead ... what makes you say it is detrimental?

I was told that at a flying club many years ago when i was doing then research when i first got a heli. it has been repeated many times over. i have never flown fixed wings and found Helis easy to do so thought that it must be true.

When learning how to fly keep it close to you the last one was too far away from you for stating off. Don't run after it, bring it back to you. learn to hover first, then point it in different directions, then backwads, side to side and forwards. then in a circle then figure of eight. Then expand your flight. It looked like you were up in the air then went fix wing mode.

That one did 'get away' from me a bit (was trying to bring it back - honest!) ... but the fish-eye nature of the go-pro makes it look further away than it was in reality. I was only ~2m away at the start .. and going by number of foot seps when I ran to collect it, it was <20m away at the end!

I wanted to try and hover it, but it kind of lifted up too far and I had to go with it ... I have now 'mixed out' some of the collective (blade pitch) so the engine will have a wider rev range for any given lift range!

I think I understand all the theory - but theory doesn't mean jack when the thing is starting to get out of control and panic sets in!! Very Happy

I should really get someone that knows what they are doing to 'set it up' for me and can tell me if I have the servo travel correct etc ... I'll look online ...

#1 tip...if things go pear-shaped, cut the throttle. The blades hitting stuff while under power is what does most of the damage with these things.

If you chop the throttle on a proper RC heli there's a very good chance that when it comes to ground the blades will strike the tailboom and both will be destroyed.

Pabber's one did that under power, it dented the tail-boom tube but the blades were ok. Broke one of the rotor-head linkages though.

Funny you should say that ...

If only I had read that BEFORE I just took it out again!!! Doh!

It wasn't even THAT hard a bail out landing ... this model heli flying is a cruel unforgiving mistress!! Crying or Very sad

I've got a Blade MSR to practise with before getting a bigger one. It has all the functions of a bigger one but is mainly for indoor flying. I've also got Phoenix flight Sim and have a play on that a fair bit. Watching those vids has convinced me to stay with the sim for a bit!

I'd be interested to hear what experienced RC helicopter pilots think of the helicopter simulators. As I mentioned above, I was already an experienced fixed wing flyer and then tried a fixed wing sim ... wasn't convinced ... but that was a while back now ...

Sadly there is actually quite extensive damage to my heli ... not just the obvious tail stuff, but the swash-plate mech, main blades ... think the airframe might be a write off ... that didn't last long Crying or Very sad

Er, I must have had <1min total flight time, 2 crashes the last one resulting in writing the airframe off ... that is hardly a massive success ... did you total yours quicker than that!! Shocked

I just worked out the 'pound per hour' it cost (bearing in mind I need a new airframe now - but the engine and radio live on, so don't need the whole lot) ... wish I hadn't!! Sick

Very Happy

Yeah. Why the hell is it that with both of ours we couldn't just take off and hover? I thought the gyro was supposed to make that possible, even with an inherently unstable 4ch jobby. Bloody shite. I've had more fun with my 3ch £30 one.

Choppers with more than 3ch suck balls.

I had a fair few 5 second 'flights' Flights being getting it off the ground, not really in total control, and quickly dumping it back down again. The crash that did for it was when I thought 'fuck it, lets go for it' Proceeded to dump it back down too heavily when my bottle went, and the main rotor bent down and smashed into the tail boom. Also the rear rotor linkage broke.
The whole affair was always a little scary as it made a horrendous noise when up to full speed and total destruction was always but a moment away..... Embarassed Laughing

Oh and this WILL be the last time I try as it is no fun picking up bits of broken chopper and watching £££ signs flashing by!!!! Wink

Yup, I repaired mine once (main rotor connection rod which I still have 4 spare in the packet) and the second bigger crash was enough for me. I had wild ideas of putting a cam' on there and somehow linking it to my pc, then being able to fly it from my PC room.. Rolling Eyes Laughing
Was a fun experience but too expensive to pursue.

I have been fiddling about with the transmitter and it seems there are loads of different settings 'throttle up' ... blah blah ... it seems to be logical, but I think I am better getting the new one set up by someone in the know .... you don't get much time to tinker/trim when it is all over in 10 seconds!! Crying or Very sad If I can get someone to put a good base setting in for me then I am half way there.

My transmitter has a 'buddy' socket, so even better if I can get someone to link up to to bail me out when things go wrong!! Very Happy

But to be honest, with one that is set up better/properly, I fancy my chances a lot more ... or am I just being overly optimistic here?!!? Very Happy
