Running fine this morning, took her 2 miles down the road to uni, parked up everything normal nothing to worry about! On to class I go...

And about 2 hours later come back to find..... she won't start, at all, spark plug is working, I walked to the petrol station to get more fuel, thats fine too....

Spent the past hour and a half taking things apart including having a look in the carb, plenty of petrol there so it isn't blocked by any means I wouldn't have thought.

She would turn over for afew seconds when bump started in second but only for a few, tried and tried again and she did get abit better but darkness was upon us and now my bike is stranded several miles down the road in a nice person's driveway Crying or Very sad

So if the fuel is running through fine, spark plug is fine, and there's plenty of fuel, what on earth could it be?

First time I'am actually fully bricking it about my bike Confused

I'd check the fuel tank first. Shine a torch in and look for water and dirt. If it's easily spotted i.e lots of it. Then drain the whole tank into a jerry can.

I don't see where it could have came from, shes been running fine for weeks now and nothing has changed, although she was running fairly low on petrol! And I could have sworn I saw some black dirt shizzle in the inline filter.

When I get her back, hopefully tomorrow (2 miles of uphill wheeling, can't wait) I'll take a better look.

Ps whilst taking off the carb I loosened up the accelerator cable, re tightened it up fully n now it feels like the handle is connected to nothing it literally moves back n forth with no effort. What have I buggered up in this end?

Kick start was also kicking back abit when I put it all back to together.

I've made it all horribly worse haven't I Laughing

Thing is there was definitely petrol getting to the engine, some at least and shit loads in the carb. Which I suppose could be a blockage, not enough getting from the carb to the engine...

My dad mentioned something about the contact breakers?

So things to do tomorrow when I get her back up here... check the spark plug with a bit of petrol, check inside the tank, take the carb apart fully? (Never done it before so I'll need abit of help with that one).

Half tempted to just pay for a mechanic to fix her but I suppose I'll get skinned, plus, there's only one way to learn!

Okily dokily! Me thinks I'll get my m8 to come and grab the fuel tank in his car, it'll make pushing the thing a tad easier.

Any other ideas fire away as I've all night to think about it! Got the Haynes manual although the only thing I find is it doesn't tend to tell you in much detail how to adjust cables ie the throttle, clutch, etc

Fairly simple stuff I'am sure but I don't quite know how it all exactly works.

replace plug first, my brother's bike recently stopped working despite sparking still. New plug sorted it.

Stripping the carb is the last thing you wanna do.

Riding fine one day and not working the next day is unlikely to be fuel related. More electrical

Could be blockage in the fuel filter so fuel isn't getting to the carb quick enough to keep the engine going. Pick one up for a few pence and try that is what I'd suggest.

I had a similar problem and spent weeks trying everything but as soon as I put new filter on it was good as new.

If you actually screwed the cable, spring and needle off the top of the carb, you may have pulled the sleeve out of the carb a little bit and then puished it back in again thinking it was OK. This sleeve has a groove in it that mean it only slots exactly into place when its in the right position. Check that its fully seated with the groove in the right place.

if the throttle is moving freely, you may have jammed the thottle fully open.... if that's happened, it won't start...

At least, that's what happened on my CG.

If you took the throttle valve out of the top of the carb ( cylinder shaped slide with spring & needle ) it has to be put back in the groove for it to seat properly , as flump said .

Thanks a lot guys, it'll make it all a tad easier tomorrow when this is to be done!

I made sure the grooves lined up as each side was a different width and screwed the top on tight, even so I never looked to see if it was seated properly! (Twas getting dark though lol)

From this and your previous posts it sounds like the carb does need a good clean-out. Poor starting and no idle can also be low compression but as you only have 13k miles on it that shouldn't be the case.

Turning up the idle can cause your bike to be hard to start, as it reduces vacuum between the carb and engine. Try turning the idle screw back down and starting it on choke.

The CG is very frgal on petrol so if there's any fuelling issues it will be sensetive to them. I suggest getting it home and stripping the bowl off the carb, inspect the inside. Take photos.

How long was the petrol in the tank for?

Is there water in the fuel?

Mate, is there a chance someone has fucked about with your bike? Strange that it was running fine one moment and the next you cannot get it running?

Up and running! Very Happy Pushed her 2 miles back home, stripped carb, wee pump off the carb and cleaned the jets n valves.

Cleaned spark plug and flushed the inline filter, also replaced the clutch cable which has made clutch control sooooooo much easier.

I checked and there is the odd bit of dirt floating around, I'd like to flush the tank but I've nowhere to do it atm as I'am in uni accom don't even have a few containers to drain my current petrol into.

As for flushing should I just use fresh petrol? Just it seems abit expensive especially as said dirt may take several flushes to get rid of.

To anyone who reads this thread after having a similar problem all I can say is don't be afraid to take things apart, DO have a haynes manual though lol

I'm glad my vague idea of your carb might be dirty because of low fuel worked Smile
