......not including drunken last dance types Thumbs Up

Since the Mrs has put the brakes on the 'race ped' project I had to take it to the petrol station today for some motion lotion then on to the MOT station.

My ride involved a 3 mile long straight dual carriageway, busy town center and a short NSL road. I had forgotton just how shite scooters are.....I was there with the throttle bang against the stop and couldn't get more than 35 (indicated). Whenever a hill approached it was down to 25 mph and I even had builders in town giving me the salute Rolling Eyes I guess that every cager going past was having a wee old giggle.

Surely these things can't be road legal, I do actually have a little sympathy for 'ped boi's now' The worst thing is that I have got to ride it back later!

Awaiting the cool/shite story bro.

It has occurred to me that we force our most inexperienced youngest road users onto the most dangerous form of motorised road legal transport available.

Being stuck below 30 just means the little shites get tailgaited, overtaken and cut up by EVERYONE.

I've been riding various bikes for 11 years and I was shi*ting myself being cut up by every tom, dick and HGV.

It was quite funny though beating the cagers off the roundabout as the low speed meant I could plan miles in advance and take the roundabout flat out Thumbs Up

I think all learner bikes should be able to do 60.

I don't have a problem with them.

Defensive driving is the key. No fucker cuts me up on a moped, pushbike or small capacity bike because I don't allow them to.

If you're getting cut up, you're doing it wrong.

Not really much you can do on a dual carriageway if you are dominating your lane, making yourself as big as possible (fairly easy in my case Sad ) and they decide to pull in right in front of you. I can hardly nail the throttle to catch up Wink

As said i lol'd at leaving them for dead on the roundabout and in the town traffic!

I had to overtake a 4x4 with horse trailer on the A3 when I was on my old CG 125. That was bad enough.

Had to sit behind it for about 5 mins till I could see a straight and no traffic behind me and it took a good 30 seconds of pinning it to get past. Small bikes are not built for extended high speed road riding!

Never went on a dual carriage way on my 'ped for that reason. And it was bad enough on a 125 trying to overtake a lorry, pull out and get hit by a headwind that the lorry had been protecting me from, got up to about the cab level and the bike had no more had to let off and go behind it again. Embarassed

Every time I went on the dual carriage way on my C90 I burnt the inlet valve out.

I can now replace them with one hand behind my back I have done them so many times!

Brings back fond (erm Laughing ) memories of owning a C70 years ago. Did 45 down a 1 in 3 hill, followed by a 90mph wind, if you kept your head down lol Was a nightmare anywhere but in heavy traffic. Going up hills into a wind was dreadful. Not even having a manual clutch to slip made matters worse.

The thing with Cub valves burning out is caused by insufficient lead in the fuel. In the days when you could still buy 4 star, using that would allow you to wring the neck of a Cub and keep your valves from burning out. I have a feeling using super unleaded might have a similar effect but I've not had a steppy in many years to try it out.

As much as I hated the stigma that went with it I did rather like my C90 for the fact that it did the job and never really broke down (unless, as I stated, I abused it)

So much so that its still in my garage 2 years later just sort of sitting there stopping the rest of the garage from spilling out onto the road, sort of a C90 tidal wall really.

I can't imagine many things more dangerous than riding a 30mph scooter on UK roads.

You'd either be riding well out with Astra Man 2" from your rear wheel, or do the classic pedboi gutter-hug and get constantly cut up and pulled out on. Pale

I'm sorry, but I still maintain it's as safe as the rider.

I never have a problem on slow bikes. I never had a problem on mopeds. If they are tailgating you either look round and give them a dirty look, slgnal to them to back-off or wobble slightly. Ultimately, stop in the middle of the road and ask them if they have some sort of problem.

Never, ever ride in the gutter unless you are conciously pulling across to let someone pass where YOU think it's safe to do so.

I remember having a restricted DT50MX briefly a few years ago and it was absolutely fucking lethal, because of the total lack of go. Definitely would have been considerably safer if it had done what the bike was designed to - 45-50mph.

Well..........the MOT guy didn't have time to do it so I guess that gives me more time to play with it. Also means 2 more trips on my ped.

There's no restrictors in the exhaust or intake system so i guess I'll be looking for the classic variator washer. There's not much info on derestricting these SYM Jets.

Don't think 50's were made for 15 - 16 stone of welsh rugby player!

I'd rather walk than ride in the gutter, dominate your lane and make the *uckers pay attention.

I remember my little suzuki AE50 "style"... it had none.

I couldn't be doing 30 everywhere, mine did 45 after decoaking the exhaust Thumbs Up Might have had something to do with that large washer that fell out of the end and subsiquent tinkering with the carb to get it running right again Laughing

It was nice to keep up with traffic on the 40mph duel carrageways that were my usual route to work rather than getting bullied by pretty much everything else on wheels.

Agreed.

It's amazing how many L-plate commuters think it's safe to wobble along in the gutter being over-taken by everything.

Now that I'm in a position to do something about it, I tend to pull them over and give them the benefit of my 5 minutes experience in biking.

Some of them probably think I'm being the stereotype of the weary traffic rat, but hopefully enough of it sinks in to make them a little safer.

In my CBT my instructor taught me a few defensive-riding tips, including where to sit in the lane. Don't they do that anymore?

the sym scooters benefits from a new exhaust, variator restrictor removed, and a new CDI. My brother's one is quicker off the mark than my girlfriend's zip 4T which is not restricted and easily tops 45mph
