Okay so I am only 16 and hopefully going to make a lifetime out of biking. I have grown up with bikes (mainly 2 strokes) so know a few things but obviously not as much as I want to. I hardly know anything about 4 strokes!

I know the internet is a good way to find out but I wondered if there are any books you can recommend that would help me learn? Preferably separate books for 2 and 4 stroke?

Some of you may say just read a manual but that tells you how to do stuff instead of why. I will hopefully be getting a project bike next summer if funds permit and I have passed both bike and car tests.

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

dunno about books but id say youll learn so much more from practicle, so as you said about a project bike. if your were to get a 4 stroke project bike you will learn a hell of alot from simply working on it.

i would of thought theres plenty of books on 2 and 4 stroke mechanics etc etc, but i cant recomend any im afraid.

i would advise doing your bike test before car if its down to choosing because of money, mainly because bikes are just so much more fun Very Happy

50s are too slow, but just stay on it untill youve done your test and then get a restricted 4/600 Thumbs Up dont bother with 125s. unless its for a project bike of course, plenty of 125 project bikes available

And it says for engineers, well thats where I am looking at going. Not just looking at how engines work for biking but is good background knowledge for a job.

IMO they are actually dangerous. I mean not just for me but others too. Im 6'1, weigh like nearly 16 stone and the bike weighs a tonne! Its ridiculous.

Nah, hopefully looking at a bandit 600 as I could sell my bike for around a grand. Hopefully getting a job so that should pay for my licence and insurance, restrictions etc. Dunno if I should restrict it though :/

Steering off the thread a bit here but what is a good mileage, medium, and high/watch what your buying here? Anyone know what bandits are like for reliability?

Thanks

id personally go for a hornet over a bandit, not on looks but the general build of the bike etc.

mileage is abit of a grey area, its more due to the condition of the bike, id personally be happy up to 30k, after than id probably try looking for one with lower mileage. but as i said, depends if its obvisouly been ragged and not looked after etc, the general condition is more of a sign than milege

i would get it restricted, at least for few months untill your used to it. althought a bandit is not particularly powerful bike, it will be one massive jump from a 50 so you should be sensible. so yeah, i would restrict it at least for some time untill your used to it mate.

Im after something a bit cheaper really. Bandits can be picked up for under a grand. The power doesnt bother me. I think I could handle it. Most of the time it would only be me just plodding to school anyway. By the time I get to school the bike would be at temp anyway Laughing

And as people say, the bike only goes as fast as you twist the throttle.

The police arent big down here and I have a mate who has an unrestricted cbr400rr but I am worried if I get caught... Dad reckons it would be alright but I havent explained the ins and outs to him fully but he was like yeah it would be fine just take it easy.

Not saying I am going to but would they check if I crashed? As in dyno the bike if I hit someone? And what are the fines/points?

Cheers! Thumbs Up

true, bandits are cheaper and it is down to you about how much throttle you give it. you just need to take it easy at first as it will be quick.

if you were to crash, insurance would more than likely check that it is restricted. if it isnt, your insurance wont pay out, and if the police press charges which they more than likely will, it would be driving with no insurance. which is 6 points i believe, may be 3 but pretty sure its 6. if it is 6 then youll get banned for 2 years and have to re do your test.

where abouts do you live?

Yeah, thats what I mean. Even jumping from my 50 onto a restricted bandit I think I will still have to take it easy actually.

And I live in Plymouth.

December Laughing I saw a thread the other day and it got me excited Razz

And yeah, all of my mates are on 125's and 50's anyway so it would be fine. It's fast enough for everything so I don't see any major issues. It's just being on a bike that is more capable and the stupid prices. What did you pay? And at the end of the day, its there for a reason. But I do think 2 years is harsh. 1 would be sufficient.

it will be plenty quick lol, theres people round here with de restrcited rs125s and there no match for a restrcited 4/600, although they will make the argument that there the same power. they really arent in the same leauge.

what did i pay for what ? my bike or to have it restricted?

Hi there HD,

I had the misfortune of crashing a YZF600R which was unrestricted.

Besides the fact is almost claimed my life, the Police instantly confiscated the bike and had it examined for a restriction. I admitted to them that it was unrestricted.

They made a stern point of telling me that if I didn't have the highly severe lift threatening injuries I had, they would have charged me with:

Driving in non-accordance with licence. 3 Points.
Driving without valid third party insurance. 6 Points.

So from a single crash, I would have ended up with:

6-9 Points.
Massive fine.
No more licence.
MASSIVE insurance premiums for 5 years.

To put this long story short, it is really not worth being unrestricted. It's only two years and 33bhp is plenty enough to get you about and my SV will still do 110mph (INDICATED) on a "private road". Wink.

Also, it will make it all the sweeter when you are unrestricted, I've ridden R1s, R6s, GSXR600s and many other bikes and whilst I can't wait to be unrestricted, I have more fun on my 33bhp KLX300 and KDX200 on the road and in the fields than I did on an 180bhp R1.

At the end of the day, it's the law to be restricted. I'm sure you don't break the law elsewhere and what's more, if you do have a horrible crash and end up maiming some pedestrian for life, you have no insurance to cover them for their staggering losses and I'm sure you'd feel (and rightly be) a massive cvnt. I've learnt my lesson and I hope other people learn from mine too, don't learn the hard way and just follow the law, it's not long.

And clancy that is still bloody expensive though. You keeping the bike after your restriction?

My insurance runs out 10 days after my birthday so do you think I should pass my test and ride my pushbike until I get a better bike?
