I am new to biking (2 years) but have ridden every day since, although this is on roads. Does anyone know where I can try off road riding? Is there places where you can go an hire the kit and a bike and be taken off for a go on riding??

I am located just South of Gatwick and so anyone know somewhere?

Plenty of places around the South .. such as:
Golding Barn - https://www.yamaha-schools.co.uk/?page=southeast
Ady Smith - https://www.adysmith.co.uk/schools/venues-dates/
But they cost hundreds of your english Pound Coin

Why not wait a month or so ... then a few of us will start going to the local tracks (Four Marks / Gingers / Scarrats etc).
You can then pop along .. borrow some kit and have a go on numerous bikes.
This then only costs a few Penny Coin Thumbs Up

Join the SE Section ... and people are always posting up in there about tracks they are attending and willing to lend bikes for tryouts.
(BigTobyD did one last weekend with a few bikes)

Thanks for that. It must be said that the later option of joining some other bikes that might let me have a go is sounding rather good. I suspect I might well get the big for this as I log the bikes, have always loved cross country riding (mountain bikes) and so the 2 together I think would be excellent, throw in some mud and all is well.

I have joined the region and so hope to have a chance some time soon Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Not in the area, so afraid I can't help - but I definitely think taking up a kind offer from friendly local dirty bikers is the way to go.

If you like XC mountain biking, you'll love enduro Very Happy.

A few of us ride mountain bikes around the Surrey Hills too.
Great way to get fit ... you should see me ... i am like an adonis, ask anyone they will tell you.

Anyway, we ride every weekend and once of twice during the week (night riding).
Some great trails and good fun.

This is a clip from a ride I did about 30 minutes ago:

I'm Horsham based and as Silky said we were at Four Marks the other weekend, we'll undoubtedly be doing it again in the next couple of months, keep 'em peeled in the South East section and give me a shout and remind me the next time we're organising one.

Hi guys - Ok, I must admit that the night time bit might be a bit beyond me at the moment and the spot of white in the dark was a little limiting but I had a look at one of the day rides you guys did and it looks awesome. I am SO wanting to have a go and REALLY appreciative if you guys are able to help me have a go. Is there a specifically good way to stay in the loop about when you might be going out? Might be a good stlye of excercise even as the beer belly is definately kickiing in (who am I kidding, did years ago). What would I need to bring along? Wheres about do you meet up?

Never thought I would get an offer to try it and so really appreciative

I did the Goldings Barn Yamaha day it was great! Really enjoyed it it was a good introduction to off-roading.

I'm looking at doing this this year too. (stage 2)

https://www.adventureridingacademy.com/COURSES(1511375).htm

Then I will consider getting an Offroader, I love it, the trouble is I'm not sure I can afford the upkeep of another bike.

That last course is £450.
Add that to the £300 you paid for Golding Barn.
Not far off the price of an ok Off-Roader Thumbs Up

Stop spending money of event days ... and go out and buy a bike and ride it .

Golding barn was £175, would have been cheaper if I realised you get a discount for having a Yamaha 20% IIRC, and anyway I didn't pay for it it was a present.

The cost of the offroader is not the problem it is the insurance. PLus having another bike to tax and maintain. Then on top of that is the cost of the gear a new lid, gloves, armour, boots, plus whatever else. Also the fact I don't know anythign about the 'scene' in my neck of the woods. and I don;t think we have any green-lanes at all. If I was to go with you lot it would be a 50 mile each way trip to get to box hill. Plus it is the storage We already have 6 bikes and the garage is very crowded.

See lots of reason why not, I want to make super sure I 100% want to do it and have a reasonable amount of experience before taking the plunge.

Insurance = £60 a year ish
Tax = £60 a year (?).

But yeah, maintaining the bike can run into a few hundred a year ... and buying the kit.
Although, I did it the cheap, stinky, scumbag way .. and got everything from ebay.
None of it matches... and I look a bit silly.... But fek it, I am riding through cow sh*t and pi*s anyway.

Tax will be £33 for <400cc.

Oh and silky, you must really value all those rules floating about in your head... don't think I paid over £45 for a dirt bike helmet!

I have no chance of getting cheap boots as I am a size 49.

Do MX boots usually come up the same size as other boots?

The question surely is there the opportunity to find some people where you can pool together for a bike and then go out alternate weekend or something and share the costs

Not sure it's worth it to be honest. You can get a pretty cheap bike that will do you fine for most things if you don't mind getting your hands dirty occasionaly.

I sold a fantastic WR400 .. which would have been perfect for your needs (great off roader and enough power to do some road work) .. about 3 months ago.
Only asked £1300 for it.
