Hello I have an aprilia rs 50cc 2007, and i need a new front sprocket, its a 13 tooth and i have heard if i put a 14tooth on it will go faster.
Questions is this true?
and if so how much more speed do i get??

It use to go about 55mph now i can red line it and a push it will do 50.... the sprocket i have atm has 3 teeth missing.

Thanks Andrew

Why not buy both and compare the performance? They aren't exactly expensive to buy.

Save it for when the engine is knackered and can't pull up hill.

Ragging a small engine at the redline all the time will knacker it... as in it will need rebuilding sooner rather than later...

Putting a smaller sprocket on there will make the bike accelerate faster but have a lower top end speed.
A bigger sprocket it will accelerate slower but give a higher top end speed...

Its a trade off between acceleration and top speed...

Have you never ridden a push bike with gears?

Changing either sprocket will affect the speed / acceleration.

Smaller rear sprocket = Better top speed, but slower acceleration.
Bigger rear sprocket = Better acceleration, but lower top speed.

Smaller front sprocket = Better acceleration, but lower top speed.
Bigger front sprocket = Better top speed, but slower acceleration.

Personally I would leave it standard.

Yes, or there abouts. Experiment as the sprockets are quite cheap. I'd advise changing your sprocket (both front, back and the chain) asap if its missing teeth as its likely to be badly worn and have affected the whole drive train.

Check your chain is not too tight, that the back wheel is aligned correctly also and that the chain is lubed properly Smile

Thats what it did to mine! The bike rides a lot smoother so the power is not as snappy but i dont like it like that. Preferred it before. It did 45 before and 50 at a push without blowing it up but will do 55 now screaming so I may go up again... Thinking

It is 14:53 at the moment if that helps?

A 14 will make the top speed higher, but make it accelerate slower, so it might not be able to pull the gear gearing, in effect lowering it's actual top speed. I'd stick with a 13 personally.

Yeah but you then have to change the chain if you go too far. And your bike may not be able to pull much higher speeds...

It really depends on where you ride. On my 125 I used to have to travel on a NSL dual carriageway and with a 15T sprocket it would not go near 60mph. Swapping to the 17T sprocket allowed it to touch 70mph at the red line (all be it going down a steep hill with the wind behind me).

If you need top speed, make the size change. If the top speed is acceptable, leave it as it is.

Note that changing to a larger sprocket may require a slightly longer chain!
