Hi guys

I have fit a new exhaust to my scooter a 1999 Yamaha yp250 majesty and was wondering if there is anything major I need to do or use when doing the job.thought I would ask before I start the job.

Hopefully should be straight forward

Any tips more than welcome

Steve

Best tip I can give you is to spray all the nuts and bolts involved with penetrating spray the night before, especially the manifold bolts Thumbs Up

Have you got a new exhaust gasket, it's best practice to fit a new one and you'll be kicking yourself if you don't and it leaks Sick

Make sure you have proper tools that fit well and have an extension bar for reaching the manifold nuts.

You might want to put some copper grease on the exhaust studs before putting the nuts back on.
It makes it easier to get the nuts off the next time.

Something like GT85 although you could use WD as a last resort.

You may need to rejet the carb if it's a performance exhaust but be guided by what the manufacturer suggests.

Get proper penetrating spray. 3-in-1 or Plusgas. I have used 3-in-1 penetrating spray with success. During the week before I took my old exhaust off, after the commute to work in the evening I sprayed some on the header screws (YBR doesn't have nuts/studs) - the hot downpipe/engine helps the penetrant get in. I'd then spray more on before bed so it could soak in overnight. I did this every night for 4 or 5 days. You can go one stage further and make up plastacine wells around the fastners and fill them with penetrating spray to immerse them in it.

I used A2 grade stainless steel replacement screws because the old mild steel ones had rusted heavily (I was praying they'd come out in one piece). Plenty of copper grease around them as well as I have been told stainless reacts with the aluminium cylinder head and could seize with it, but a rusty mild steel fasnter snapping (or head rounding out) when trying to undo it is also bad IMO. Also give the new gasket a coating of copper grease to create a better seal.
