 |

Right, a while back I remember seeing a thread on here linked to another website about some bloke ringing up somewhere like the DVLA as there was a bike he saw that had been sat their for ages. They tried to contact the rider and in the end he got the bike. I cant find it but I think I am in the same boat, really.
Basically, I have been doing my paper round for over 3 years now and there is a CBR400rr parked in a space. I have only ever once seen it in a different space and never been ridden. Its not in hurrendous condition.
So who would I ring up to do the same thing? And what if I was riding it next year and the actual rider saw the bike and demanded it back, where would I stand?
Or do you all suggest stop being a scab and get your own bike?
I just think that its a waste of a bike just sat there as its starting to rust in a few places but still a decent bike. Also, I would quite like a CBR. However, I feel I am a bit skint, inexperienced and young to start doing track days so road riding would be the only way...
Whats your opinions and who would I talk to?
Thanks ____________________ Rusty '02 Vito Camper + CBR600F3 |

You can't just take peoples posessions because they haven't been used. That is ridiculous. On that argument I could take the Mona Lisa from the Louvre because no one has moved it for years.
Forget it, its someones pride and joy and they are probably waiting for the right time to get it back on the road. If you want it, then by all means contact the owner and offer to buy it. Otherwise forget it.
You can't just have a free vehicle because someone hasn't used it for a while. It doesn't work like that. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

It is on the road, in a parking space. Ill have a look for tax later, just ill look a bit shifty
For fastness, does anyone know directly where it is or will I have to check the usual places?
And Rob, never thought of that...
Maybe Ill ask around and see if anyone knows who owns the bike
These responses are more positive than I was expecting actually, cheers guys ____________________ Rusty '02 Vito Camper + CBR600F3 |

I was always told that if I wanted something then I would have to save up for it.......not find one that belonged to somebody else and then steal it.
Just because it's been there a while it doesn't mean that the owner should let you take it, he could be a hero in Afganistan, ill or just hasn't got the money to put it on the road.
I would love a new bike but i'm sure it would feel much better when I have lusted after it and saved for a while to get it rather than taken somebody else's.
You could try and find the owner and come to some sort of rental agreement where you put it back on the road and use it for a nominal fee or just buy it! ____________________ Current ride - Yamaha MT-07 |

I had wondered about this, well more along the lines of contacting the owner and offering to buy it. There is a cbr 125 that has been sat at uni for over a year now not moving, the tyres are a bit flat and the chain is slack as hell and rusted. But with a little love it could be a good bike again. Just no idea who to ask . ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Present: 97 ER-5.

Short answer - it's thair property not yours. Leave it alone or find the owner and buy it. If it's in a parking space, there must be houses nearby. Pick the 20 closest houses to the bike and go door-knocking one afternoon, someone will know who the owner is. They might even donate it to you if you spin them a hard-luck story. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

The way it works is that when the DVLA get the enquiry they send out a letter to the registered keeper asking for a response on the subject. If they get no response then you get a V5......simples.
Obviously the method is fraught with danger as it doesn't take into consideration people who work away etc.
You can do a registered keeper enquiry from the DVLA for about £2.99 as long as you can provide a lawful reason for wanting to know. Then offer to buy it or loan it ____________________ Current ride - Yamaha MT-07 |

i had the same story, basicly there was a tl1000 in a council car park for months, flat tyres ect.
It got a notice put on it, saying it was due to be removed and crushed on the, 15th say, i did abit of asking around, and found out that the chap that owned it was in prison for drugs offences.
i was interested in buying it, and didnt want it too be crushed, so i moved it into another car park one night.
Anyway, the guy got out of prison, came round my house and thanked me for moving his bike so it didnt get crushed, he didnt want to sell it, but at least i kept one more bike from becoming turned into a fridge.
I know by even moving it, i was commiting an offence, but i took the risk, and the guy got to keep his bike.
see if you can ask a friendly police officer, check online if its taxed and insured with the Registration, Askmid.com for the insurance, and dvla tax check for the tax. ____________________ Current : 06 Zx10r, 07 Wr450f SM, 74 850 norton commando, 63 bsa b40, 1962 Triton 650, 67 Triumph Tr6r, 1955 Triton 750, 1978 TY250E. |

There's not much chance of getting a copper to run a PNC check on a bike and furnish you with the owner's details, if that's what you mean by ask a friendly copper. It'd be a serious disciplinary offence for them. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I think you should stick to your 125 as you may be a hazard on the road with a brain like yours pal. |
Jog on, Ive done research about this. Read threads, which I cant find now, of people who have done the same thing. I am going to do this legally, if I follow it through. Its not stealing. Im not that type of guy.
You want to find bolt croppers to cut a 10mm chain, know how to break a steering lock and get 'your' bike back without doing anything the proper way. 'Devvo' is a chav micky take and labelling yourself as devojunior makes you come across as a chav too.
Dont start picking on others when your at fault yourself.
Also, claiming that I have got a 'bad brain' when I clearly am more academic than you just shows how much of a tool you are. I also seem to have more common sense as well as I am trying to take a legal, formal and 'right' approach. Please, tell me if I am wrong.
In the responses to the 'normal' answers, I think Im gonna leave it to maybe June/July and go doorknocking. That way its after my exams have finished and I have nothing better to do. If it does turn out that the owner does not want it, or cannot be found, or wants minimal money for it, that gives me time over the summer to fix it up, make it looks shiny and get it ready for December. ____________________ Rusty '02 Vito Camper + CBR600F3 |

ITS NOT FUCKING LEGAL.
The only reason it MIGHT be legal is if someone left the bike on YOUR property and did not come back to claim it.
As I said, you CANNOT GO AND TAKE BIKES FROM PRIVATE PROPERTY WITHOUT PERMISSION.
IT IS STEALING.
You *may* apply for the V5 of a vehicle that according to the DVLA has no registered keeper and has clearly been abandoned in your private land, or on public land, however you don't know that this is the case for this bike. The guy who owns it is probably just too lazy to fix it and too lazy to sell it. By applying for the V5 you aren't suddenly legitimising theft.
Guvnor, There is no legal way you can do it if the bike is parked on private land that you don't own, and hasn't clearly been abandoned. If for example the bike had been left in the OP's garage for five years, then perhaps it might be possible for him to claim it, however, IF the owner wants it back then they should have it back.
Jeez, I was taught what was and what wasn't stealing when I was about five years old, and this is clearly stealing. It doesn't matter if the bike has been neglected, turned into a toast rack, covered with concrete or whatever it is still stealing.
Just because there is a loophole in DVLA procedure that allows you to apply to become the registered keeper of a vehicle, doesn't mean that you should suddenly start doing it, and it doesn't mean that the vehicle suddenly becomes legally yours. As I said, it doesn't work like that, and you know why it doesn't work like that. Because you're stealing someone elses property! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
