Got fed up of thinking "How the crap am i gunna sort my bike out"
Didnt know wether to get a new engine? change gear box? buy a new bike?
So i thought f*ck it, and ripped the engine out in the garage!

Not doing too bad at the mo, Took me about 2hours to completely remove engine, Never messed about with a bike before in my life.

Has anyone on the forum ever done this before. Im after some advise on what parts to order and change?
And some re-assemble tips please!

Good luck splitting cases if you've never done much work before.

Even more luck will be needed upon inspecting the gearbox, and then re-assmebly.

Document and photograph EVERY step.

I'd assume second and sixth gear cogs (afaik output shaft side)
and maybe one of the selector forks.

Let us know how you get on - I'm going to have to do this at some point :s

Think of it this way:
It's fucked. How exactly you have no way of knowing without taking it apart. If you do take it apart and can't put it back together you'll have to buy a new engine and break the old one for spares. If the damage is unfixable the same applies.
So you may as well pull it apart and have a look. Even if you then take it to a garage you'll have saved the money it would have cost in labour to have them take it apart anyway!

I lost 6th gear on a bike. I'd never had an engine case apart before, and while being a single cylinder so easier to work on, i found it really easy to do in a few hours.

It wouldn't be the first time I've messed with engine. Just first on a bike.
how hard can it be lol
Will be documenting with pics etc.
I have just bought a gearbox from an o3 5sl. Bye bye problem for good if all goes well

Its slow progress from now on, In 2 hours ive managed to strip bottom half, Case is split, output shaft is out, Just need a clutch holding tool so i can pull input shaft out,
All is ok still,

Not looking forward to re-build tho

Sounds like things are going well.
It's either the selector barrel, forks or dogs. Swap what's needed from the gearbox you've got. As said above it's probably the dog's so make sure the ones on the gearbox you got aren't on their way out as well. generally just try to make the best one you can out of the 2.

Putting it all back together is actually the good bit where everything seems less daunting i find. Rather than collecting more and more tiny little bits, your reducing the number of bits you have to worry about losing Laughing
Just make sure you have a tea break before any major bits or you'll end up rushing and cock something up Wink

Biscuits would be acceptable.

Brilliant. Someone that actually talks sense looool. I've actually found an 5sl gear box. I'm going to do a complete swap. The new box only has 3k on it. The only thing I'm workried about when rebuilding is forgetting something

Just a thought! Is the shift cam from a 5eb going work for the 5sl gearbox??

Year to year updates usually consist of external cosmetics and different after market style parts put on (suspension, exhaust, lights etc) a gearbox takes a lot of designing and testing so i think it's likely to have been left pretty much the same.

my gearbox is in bits too just bought another 5eb one off ebay as yamaha wanted 380quid for 6th, 2nd, left fork and drum. looks like ill still be buying them as the ebay one is a pile of shit also. not happy. alot of people have said 2nd generation box fits.. is this so?

I believe it's second generation gears. I'm not 100% sure though.
£380 is steep keep ringing around. Or go on R1-R6 forums as sometimes people have new ones for sale.
I got mine from the States. Never trust R1 and R6 boxes on ebay as odds on they are selling them for the same reason you are fixing them.

What CUNT!

Recieved the 5sl gearbox today, put in to engine, joined cases together only to realise 2nd gear has a crack in one of the teeth,

the seller i bought my one off on ebay recons it was fine and checked by 2 experianced members of staff..! must of been experianced in being a tea bitch or something because it certainly aint fine. Mad having no end of trouble trying to get them to admit they may of made a mistake and its starting to get abit heated now.. i aint letting them take my money for a box of crap bits that is only worth something in scrap! Success!

I now have a 2003 5SL gearbox in my 00 R6

Got sick of messing around with ebay, Getting a refund on the ebay 5sl,

Went up my local breakers and bought a low millage 2003 engine,
Ripped out box and fitted it into my engine last night,

Fitted engine in frame this morning,
All is good, Massive difference, feels like a brand new bike!

Gunna be selling all spare engine parts ex the gearbox!
