Hiya,

I failed my MOD2 today and am looking at retaking it once the 10 day period is expired. On the DSA website it lists the fees for MOD2 as £75 for a weekday or £88.50 for a weekend/ weekday evening/ bank holiday. The training school that trained me charge £159 for MOD2, apparently they sit on pre booked slots at the local test centre. I was just wondering if this huge difference in price was normal or considered justified by anyone?

Thanks!

Did you sit it on their bike? Did an examiner accompany you?

If so, you got your money's worth.

If you sat it on your own 125, unaccompanied, then you paid for the convenience of the quick availability of the slots. Some test centres can be booked many weeks in advance.

But they also get a lot of cancellations, so if you can be available at short notice, you should be able to nab a slot by booking yourself.

If you think you paid too much, that's the price of not doing your homework. I don't think it's unreasonable, it's not like they forced you to go via them.

At that price I'd expect to have been escorted by an instructor on the training school's bike, was that the case? If so, you definitely got your moneys worth.

They have to make a profit remember, as much as it may seem they are nice people at the end of the day they are a business and out to make a profit.

When I failed my Mod 2 that was taken with the instructor present, I rebooked that day for 11 days in the future, went on my own and passed.

Thumbs Up!

By examiner do you mean instructor (of the riding school) as a supposed to the actual person examining me for MOD2, if so no. However I did use their bike and they did get the test sorted for me within a few days. I'm not saying it's a rip off, it was convenient for my situation at that time.

Anyway, now I've got my bike fixed and am pretty confident on what I need to do to pass MOD2 I don't feel it would be worth it for me to pay extra for their admin fee. I've been told before that you can snatch up cancelled MOD2 bookings if your quick, is there any way to do this over the phone or do you have to use that online booking tool on the directgov website? I can't seem to find a phone number for the test centres on the site.

Edit: I posted this as Paulington posted his post (above) and so didnt see his post before I hit the send button.

You can't use their bike for free. At least part of the extra will have been bike hire.

Mmm, then you were mostly paying to use their slot. (Ooo-er, Matron).

Booking online is easier - you can just keep refreshing and try to snipe a cancellation.

It cost me £135 including an hours pre test lesson, hire of the bike (500cc) and test fee.

I did however buy this at the same time as booking a full day of mod 2 training which cost £168 and i'd previously done mod 1 training and test with the school.

All in all it cost me about £600 to get through both mods, the riding school organised it all.. I passed both mods first time so well worth the money.

Dont know where you are in the country but what you paid seems within reason if you used the schools bike and was escorted to and from the test centre.

I would'nt under estimate good training as its usually the little things that make the difference on the test or a glaring error, either way good tuition is worth the money in my view.

If you book the test yourself online or via telephone - 0300 200 11 22,

the cost is £75 - there shouldn't be a premium charge for the school booking it for you - certainly not that much - if you were having their bike and their instructor with you, then it would be appropriate.

If you book yourself - make sure you select the correct category of bike.

Cancellations are easy to pick up and can appear at any time Smile - best time to check is early evening, when the schools have done their admin and thrown back the tests they are not going to be using Smile
