One thing with the earlier ones, is if they have had abuse from people doing wheelies, second gear can be fuc ked. I learnt this from BCF, and when I test rode an r6 I realised it was fuc ked. If I hadnt been told to check for it, I might have bought it.

What you do, is while in second gear, rev it a bit. If it's fuc ked, it drops out of gear as if you had knocked it into neutral, but you havent touched the gear lever.

The one I tried, would do this at less than half revs with less than half throttle.

I believe that problem was fixed by 2003.

AS with most sports bikes, check steering head bearings from wheelie damage. 2nd gear can be a problem under load, so a test ride is a definate. Check for the typical crash damage, other than that they don't suffer from many problems, my 2002 has 24k on it and is still running sweet.

check reg/rec, many burn out the live wire in the block connector and leave you stranded miles away from anywhere with a flat battery . . .

How do you check that? I used to burn through loads of them on my old VFR and the only way I could tell one had failed was when my bike refused to start.

Pull off the block connector and check for charred wires/ melted block. If you pull out each pin, one will be black if it has burnt out

I assume it's pretty easily accessible on an R6 then. On my VFR you had to remove the rear bodywork to get to it. Anyone who came to view my bike and started dismantling it to that degree would get told where to stick the not-quite-enough quanitity of cash they'd brought with them.

Haha yeah of course, it was fiddly but you can manage with just your hands. Even a visual check will usually tell you if its gone, the block is white so charred bits are pretty obvious

Check around the axels for road rash. these bits get damaged in a crash but people usually don't replace them. Check it has the lock stops on the steering (crash & theft), and check that parts like the sump plug aren't drilled to be lockwired as thats a sign it's been a race bike.

I am interested to know, does the R1 have the same issue with second gear pre 2003?
Thanks!

Yes.

I think it was fixed in 03 but I'm not 100% sure!
