A 'Daft Punk Helmet' like this guy...
https://images.freshnessmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/daft-punk-helmet-1.jpg

In all seriousness though... One that fits the best.

I have a HJC ZF-10. It fits pretty well, BUT, I've just found out the other day, at anything over 50mph, it's noisy as hell. Like, I might as well have headphones on blasting white noise into my ears. It was horrible. Will be buying a better helmet as soon as funds allow tbh.

Something that fits. Get down to your local dealer try everything on until you get one that fits perfect, that is the helmet for you.

If you are unsure about what a perfect fit will be, ask one of the assistants to give you a hand.

EDIT: tvchimp beat me too it. Also I need that daft punk helmet Very Happy

Research.

Apparently a select few Arai's and Shoei's are the best few 'lack of wind noise at speed', but for those you'll be paying through the nose for them (£300+ ... tad ridiculous to me, as above £150 you're paying for a brand as they all conform to the same regulations imo)

It's not the helmet making noise might I add, it's wind noise. Most people ride with ear plugs in to stop the noise on longer journeys (anything under 20miles in short imo) I for one cannot stand them in my ears as it messes with my ear pressure causing headaches, and don't have earphones on whilst pillion-ing as I find it a bit dangerous, if I'm solo I don't mind.

Oh right and having atleast one ear headphone is illegal? or just dangerous overall not being able to hear ambulance and stuff?

Couple of things...

I've got an Arai Viper GT, cost about £400. But it's WAY better than any cheap lid I've ever had (and I've had a LOT of 'em over 20 odd years!), better fit, more adjustable, more comfortable, far, far better airflow, pinlocks etc etc. There's plenty of reasons much beyond the name why people pay for Arai lids, imo.

But it is a bit noisy by some standards. Side pods, innit. Anything with covers over wear the visor clips to the lid is going to be noisier.

It's also a little large since I had my hair cut off. I'm looking at the X-Lite X802 at the moment, but I'll wager I wind up buying an RX-7GP.

I'm not doubting they've got more features, but in my view, I cant justify paying £400 for something which does the same job as something which costs £200, or cheaper, which the only difference is a few features.. It's mainly down to my budget too I guess... If I knew it was likely to have a significant improvement over another helmet at twice the cost, I'd pay the difference to know if I came off, I'd be better protected.. mehhh... Confused

Don't get me wrong, I spent years in the cheapest things I could find. Anything to shut my mother up. And I was into scrambling and trials, too, so my gear quite often got wrecked and pocket money in the 70s/80s didn't go far... Sad

I'm not for a moment suggesting that everyone MUST buy expensive lids - I mean, for what Bape is suggesting, it'd be massive overkill.

But for me personally, I do a lot of riding and bike gear is where a lot of my money goes, for better or worse.

I'm trying not to spend £600 on a new lid, though... Neutral Very Happy

The only one I'd go for out of those listed is the Duchinni ones, I've heard quite good things about them but they're meant to be a budget brand?.. (may be wrong).

KBC Tarmac Ms51ves3 has one, from what he says its a pretty good helmet.

HJC CS-12N Had one as my first helmet, it was good, comfy but a little noisy at speed.

I'd recommend any type of Duchinni lid. Thumbs Up

Most are all 4 Star SHARP rated and cost £50 or less.

Bought my D701 for £28. Shocked (4 star SHARP rated)
I'm even thinking about getting another one after mine's had it's day.

Cheap helmets aren't always the worst.

Ghostbikes on ebay is the place to go.

Btw, when are you finally getting your DNA on the road?

Having ear plugs or listing to music is not illegal or dangerous...

I have bluetooth speakers in my helmet and can still hear sirens well away. In fact I can hear any car that has a loud system fitted and that over my loud exhaust as well.....

I find that I'm the one looking for where the siren is, while the car drivers as still in their own dream world....

as iooi said, its not illegal... Could be classed as 'dangerous' by some nazi's as you cant hear sirens as clear etc... But, when you're on 2 wheels, you're normally a lot more alert than the 'tards in cars who have their music on so loud you can feel the vibrations from the bass a mile away..

when/if I listen to music, normally only have 1 earphone in so I can hear if cars or anything is creeping up on me..

Most helmets are fine for wind noise if they fit right & you wear ear plugs. Just cause Arai & Shoei cost the most does not mean they are the quietest.

My favourite helmet is an HJC carbon. My wifes is an HJC infinity, my daughters is a shoei and my best mate has a Shark. Point is people try different helmets and when they have found a brand/model they like they usually stick with it.

Except for BMW riders who buy BMW helmets and harley riders who buy piss pots Laughing

I would disagree with this, may be cheap and may have good crash ratings, but the one I got given by my insurance after my crash was the worst quality helmet I have ever felt. I hardly used it, just went out and bought an AGV k4, which I am not that happy with either but I cant afford the lid I really want.

Urgh, he's on a 50cc, he's not going to spunk £400 on a race helmet.

Check out the SHARP ratings. They'll give you an objective standard for protection. "Yeah but no but yeah but Arai says..." is not objective.

Fit is more important though, and you have to try them out to find one that fits. Get down to your local bike shop, you can't check fit on eBay.

For noise, you can use earplugs or a wind skirt.

Remember that you don't see your helmet while its doing its job. Don't be a div and get a black Stealth Ranger one coz it iz well wikked innit. You're wearing it for protection, and that includes visibility. Nothing looks good embedded in the side of a transit. Consider one in white or bright silver, or even high-vis like the Nitro N250-VX in AW HELL YEAH YOU SAW ME orange.

Because smashing your head against a pavement at 20 mph on a 50 is different to smashing your head against a pavement at 20mph on a 1000cc fireblade how? .....

Why is someone's life less valuable because they ride a small cc bike?? The size of the bike has nothing to do with anything, its's all about the safety of the helmet!

The problem I find in buying a helmet is there is only a flimsy piece of lining on the bit that touches the top of my head, which is where its should be quite thick.
On lots of helmets I've tried, my head touches the top of the helmet.

PS.. I have Arai Chaser which fits properly for me.

I've just bought a Shark, Cost me £99.99!
Fits snug, and looks the tits, the visor system is great, SO easy to get off.

Only bad thing is, when it squashes my cheeks in, i can have a sing along without biting my cheeks.. Rolling Eyes
Nice and quiet at speeds aswell (not on my bike obviously!)

I'd just go for whatever fits you best and what you like. You are just paying for the brand in most cases
