Yes.
As long as you know what your doing and the price is very right then there isn't a problem. Everything is repairable its just a matter of cost. For instance, if its a sports 600 and it need two tyres and a chain and sprocket then you should account for £250-£300. Same on a commuter 125 would be £75. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

Yup I did exactly that, I saw the kwak advertised on some freeads website for £495 and rang the bloke up, he was honest and said it had no test and had been stood 6 months when the tax ran out etc. a similar bike with test was around £850 so I figured it was worth borrowing a bike trailer and going to bristol to get it.
all I dod was change the oil and lube the chain and it flew thru the mot (advised on fork oil as they were soft but no leaks).
Its done me well for the last year and just up for mot monday, hell i've even cleaned it twice in the time i've owned it lol.
I think on bigger bikes stuff like tyres and chains are more expensive so it would need to be reflected in the price but its usually easy to tell if something has been looked after well or not. ____________________ Hyosung cruise 125(passed test on, sold) Kawasaki el 252 (better than expected but sold on) Kawasaki GPZ500S first "big"bike.(sold) ZZR600 E5..Z750 2007,ER5, currently on a 2008 Enfield bullet electra x and loving it..

My answer is a DEFFO yes !
you can really get yourself some bargins out their
just make sure you bring someone along who is mechnically minded so they can cast their eye over the bike.
also if the bloke/girl looks mechnically minded who you are buying it off take a fast walk away. |

Actually I will change my answer.
Do not ever buy a bike from anyone, absolutely anyone, with the surname Moss, not even if your related to them. the risk is too great and life is just too short. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

I always avoid ads that say things like "Needs MOT. Doesn't need much doing. I can't be bothered to put it through a test" or "I don't have time to get it MOT'd but should pass"
Sadly, even bikers rip off other bikers, so unless you know what you're looking at/up against - get advice or don't buy. |
+1.
I never believe someone who's bike i'm looking to buy. Not a word. Too many liars. I pretty much give it an MOT by eye. I take the price i'd value a good one, then subtract money off (for the faff and hassle of getting MOT, and a little for the possibility of my having missed something that'll need to be put right). And of course, for putting right any faults i come across (that must've "slipped the seller's mind").
This, on the occassions i've tried it. means that the bike's price and my valuation of its actual value are significantly different (i.e. it's not worth the overoptimistic price they want).
People seem to think that putting "needs <minor item or 2> for MOT" is an acceptable way of trying to flog a lemon with other faults. It's not. I catch them out by finding said other (expensive) faults, then i walk, having just wasted an hour or so of their time (did i mention i check it thoroughly?). Well done to these sellers, who then no doubt to complain of all the "idiots and tyre kickers" they have to put up with on eBay. If people learned to list an honest advert in the first place, they'd perhaps have less of these "timewasters" (i.e. knowledgeable buyers who see through the bullshit) show up! ____________________ -- Ingah

Almost the same here, few bikes I have bought have had a test on them.
The key thing is to check over expensive consumables like tyres, rear shock, sprockets and chain, and adjust the price to suit. It's easy to get suckered with a £4-500 bill for tyres, pads and a chain and sprocket kit for what seemed to be a 'real bargain'. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I tend to look for bikes with no mot as they are cheaper to buy and the chances are I'm going to chop them about anyway to make them my own.
As long as you have a good look around them first (or get a mate who knows what to look for) then you should be on to a good thing.
My advice for anyone not sure or not comfortable with a 'no mot bike', walk away and buy something with mot. There are usually a good few similar bikes out there for sale so don't just jump on the first one and ride away.
I would rather check one over, see it has new boots, chain and sprockets and fork seals (like my last one) than have 7 months mot on it and have to replace ALL of the above (like my first one!)
If anyone in the suffolk area is ever thinking of doing this then feel free to pm me. Always happy to tag along to make sure you're not buying a lemon ____________________ Check out our tackle shop on Facebook:
