 |
|
Ok, I am pretty pee'd off right now. I had a guy come to see my motorbike last friday, an older guy 63 as it turns out. He came to see my Blade, he spent a good hour looking it over, (I had not riden it since I got the MOT done on November 11th) asking questions etc etc. He was interested and said he would come the next day to test ride it. So, I write a disclaimer before he took it for a ride, basically saying that if in anyway he damages it he is fully responsible. He signs it, and takes it out for a 20 minute ride. He comes back all ok. He tells me he used to be a mechanic and he always tested a bike by going at 90mph and taking his hands off the bars to see if the bike is 'straight'. No problems he said, rides well no shaking or veering to one side. So he is happy. We make a deal and shake hands to seal the deal.
He tells me he will be back in the week (wednesday) with insurance cover,to pick up and give me the cash. All ok.
So he comes over on his own, he live 25 miles away and tells me that if he rides the bike home I can follow him back (in my car) and give him a lift back to mine so he can pick up his car. A bit off as far as I was concerned, but I agreed as I wanted to make sure he took it. So I go over to his house, I ask if he enjoyed the ride, yes yes, all good. I drive him back to mine to pick up his car, he takes all the paperwork and I give him a receipt saying 'basically' all bike details, sold as inspected and tested' and he accepts. All good, job done, bike sold.
Last night I get a call. He is moaning like a banshee, 'tell me about the accident'... 'you lied to me'... 'why didn't you tell me about the other accident' I said what the hell are you talking about He is doing his nut, he told me I had not told him about a mystery accident that had put a small flat spot on the back wheel. I told him I had never had an accident or hit a pot hole to ever damage the back wheel. 'Well..' he said, you fooled me, I would never have bought the bike had I known about the damage' blah blah blah!!!
Anyway, I really never did have or ever experienced a trauma to the back end... ever in my 2 years of riding the bike. But, when I had the bike MOT'd last time, there was an advisory on the yellow sheet that there was a small flat area on the rim or the wheel, but it still passed the MOT. I never gave it a thought, I had never experienced a shake or vibration from the back, the tyre was fine, no damage. As it had an MOT last November, it was sold as a roadworthy vehical as far as I was conerned.
He is now telling me it will cost him about £420 for a new wheel, then he has to get it sprayed, he wont get a secondhand wheel because it would have come off a crashed bike blah blah blah!! He is tring to make me feel guilty....trying to make me say that I will give him some money back. But, as far as I am concerned I sold the bike 'as seen, inspected and road tested' It had a valid MOT so I think he has no come-back to me at all.
What do you guys think? |

He spent enough time looking at it, took it for a ride etc
If he took it to 90 and didn't have any vibration it's good to go
Not like you rebuilt a cat d and stiffed him

Tell him to do one
If he wanted the added insurance of being able to return it if it was faulty, he should have gone to a dealer. Instead, he chose the slightly cheaper option of going private. He probably saved more than the repair cost by going privately anyway.
At the end of the day, you always take a risk going second hand, he should know this. He seems to have taken a good time checking it thouroughly, he had his chance. Now that chance is gone, ignore him, or tell him that it's no longer your responsibilty, and if it's that big a problem for him, he should have noticed it before he bought it.
Also, he sounds like a knob! ____________________ Currently Riding - 2002 Aprilia RSV1000 Mille |

thanks for the support guys, it has really pissed me off to be honest.
If the MOT guy had said it needed replacing then I would have, I wouldn't sell something that I would not be happy riding myself. As it happens the mot was issed, so no problem.
I maybe think, as I cannot recall ever hitting a pothole, possibly it happened during a tyre change at my local trye place. Perhaps the clamp was done up too tight???
Anyway, like Angel siad, the guys a knob!! |

You've been more than fair. Not that it needs a new wheel on the back, but if he feels he must replace it and isn't happy with a 2nd hand one you might inform him he needs a front too as that is already 2nd hand ____________________ ZXR750L

From what you've written, it seems the bike was more than cared for in your hands. I'm sure you also gave him the oportunity to look over the MOT/service history, which he should have done anyway and he'd have spotted that advisory before he parted with his lakshmi. It sounds like the buyer should have bought a brand new bike from the showroom if he didn't want a single molecule to be out of place. Talk about unrealistic expectations. |

yes, lesson leanrt
He saw the mot, the advisory note was stapled behind it, maybe he never saw it before, but he saw the full service history that it had.
But an advisory note is just that ... advisory. I had an advisory on my car that said 3 tryes that were near the low level bars, I am still driving the car on the same tyres!!
You guys have been great with your comments, cheered me up a lot this morning.
The bike was loved, and I never abused it .. much It had been mothballed since the MOT last November, and had 21000 mile on the clock. It was mint, polished, clean. Like some of you say, if he wanted a new bike for the cost of a secondhand one, he should have gone to a dealer.
I have not heard anything else today, so fingers crossed I wont hear any more, but he is the sort of guy who will turn up on my doorstep....
How can I politely tell him to go fornicate

At 20000 miles it's not fair for him to expect the bike to be absolutely perfect. Looks a nice bike, I'd have been very happy with that. |
