advice on a TT600

Righto.

Need to settle my mind on this.

I've only ever ridden a 125cc single, and a 500cc parallel twin, both had carbs, and both had noisy as hell engines, so i got used to that.

But now i'm on an IL4 Fuel injected 600, and I really have no idea how it should sound.

I've been told to expect a slight tapping from under the tank, which is the injectors working.

Though when riding, if i gun it, the tapping gets louder, and quicker with the revs. Would this be the injectors?

running injector cleaner through the car for a week clears up the noise due to dirty injectors, so if i run injector cleaner through the bike, should that clear it up?

It's a 2002, with 24k miles and quite clean, so i doubt the cam chain, or anything else for that matter should be on it's way out. Going to give it an oil change, with the oil and air filters just because i can.

Just want to ease my mind. bike runs fine, starts off the button, pulls smoothly and sounds great, so i'm happy enough with it, just the noise of a bike's IL4 engine i'm not used to Laughing

Cool, cheers.

Might as well get them done while when i get the oil and filters changed.

Looking at the Service manual it does say they're due to be checked at 24k miles, so it's due it now...

So on to my next question. how do you adjust the valves on a TT600, or is it easier to take it to the triumph dealer near me and get them to do it?

Not too bad then. shall have to wait till i get paid though Laughing

The EML came on the other day too after i replaced the spark plugs, probably because i was turning the engine over without the tank on, so i'll get them to re-set it while they're at it.

You shouldn't be able to hear anything except the revving of the engine. Do you have to strain to hear the tapping noise or is it something that dominates the noise of the bike? If its really loud it could be the cam chain tensioner. These seem to fail on all four cylinder 600's of that era depending on lack of use rather than number of miles. My TT had a fairly loud fuel pump (as did my speed four) but that was a whine rather than a clicking noise.

Bear in mind my first TT dropped a valve and that sounded like someone had dropped a pebble into the engine. If your bike sounds like that, then you need to start worrying.

it's done about a hundred miles since last year, so that's probably the cam chain tensioner.

It dominates the sound of the engine at lower revs, though it only really happens on hard acceleration, and when engine braking.

I'll be taking the CCT out soon and getting that cleaned up and sorted, as that sounds the mose likely cause.

The TT's are noisy motors and you will hear a ticking type noise from the valves. Lightly blip the throttle, if you hear the noise rise and fall with the revs its probably valves (which is what I suspect from what you've said), if it goes as the revs rise and comes back as they fall then cam chain/tensioner.

As you say, at 24k it should be due its 2nd major service/valve clearance check. Ignore Dr Quack, it's a bastard of a job on the TT's (especially if any shims need changing as the cams have to come out) and will cost you more than £150. You'll be paying that much in labour just to do the clearances. Bear in mind that they are a noisy engine even when brand new, so don't expect to lose that noise when you have the clearances done.

Probably CCT. If the noise is worse from cold then its defiantly your culprit!

A little trick if it is the CCT. Before you take it out, put the bike in gear and rock it back and forwards a few times. The change in the cam chain tension is meant to free the tensioner. I have never tried it and it is a myth, but if the noise goes away then its fixed it and save you having to take it out Laughing !

With regards to valve clearances, you will only need to adjust them if they are out of spec, so measure them first. Its not very difficult just taking all the fairing off that's a pain!

If they are out of spec then you will need to remove the cams. It's not as scary as it sounds though!

Get a Haynes manual and read through the procedure. It was a massive help when I did the Fazer.

This is what I meant when I said "Do you have to strain to hear it" because as McJamweasel says, the TT600 has a noisy engine as standard.

Wise man once said: "If you have to strain to hear it, it probably isn't a problem!"

It only happens when moving, and mostly when slowing down using engine braking.

So i'll take it into Triumph when i get paid, then i'll have a look at the CCT myself and get that replaced/cleaned up.

Same ish engine as the daytona.

Was fairly "noisy" in terms of sitting idling, there was definitely alot of clicking going on!
At 12k intervals.. i think are the major services.

The valves are a cow to do.. they were on the Daytona, no doubt the TT resembles the same arse about face approach. Laughing
