Filling up a two stroke.

When you have a two stroke i know you have to mix the petrol with oil.
so when your at the petrol station do/did you guys buy oil an petrol there and then? or did you buy the petrol put it in a petrol can and do the mixing at home?

On most 2 strokes the oil is stored in a separate tank and goes through an oil pump, the oil pump is usually controlled by the throttle cable so lets the right amount of oil go to the carb where it is mixed with the petrol. This means all you have to do i top up the oil tank now and again.

What you are refereing to is pre-mix where you have to mix the petrol and oil yourself and put it in the petrol tank. On my old scrambler i had to do this and basically i would just take a small amount of oil in a pot with me (measured out) and put it in with petrol when i needed to fill it up.

Pre-mix is a pain in the arse really.

I'm liking the Dt50 more but im not sure what year model im after, As i still yet have to gather the funds to aquire it.

The DT50sm is a pretty recent bike; are you looking to buy brand new? If so, ask at the bike shop.

Either way, nigh on all new 2strokes have a separate 2T oil tank. In fact I can't name ANY brand new premix 2strokes; if there are any out there they're probably motocrossers.

I'll have a scan of some internet pics to try and identify the dt50's oil tank, should be in the same place as my dtr125's

It should have a large white tank towards the front of the bike. its easy access as you fill it up on a regular basis.

on both of those bikes its under the seat. in fact apart from the newer fizzies where its on the side i cant think of a 2 stroke that has it anywhere but under the seat.(apart from old mito has it under the tank)

The only 2 strokes I've came across where you need to mix is scramblers. All the rest have a seperate bottle and oil pump.

So the DT50sm Should have a seperate oil thank then, If it doesn't does anyone know the part oil to part petrol ratio for the DT50sm?

no knowone will know as it is definatly a seperate tank and therfore mixed for you.

I took the oil pump out of my bike a while back, its not really to much hassle to use premix. I just carry a little measuring bottle full of oil around under the seat. Pretty much any fairly new road legal bike will have a separate tank so you shouldn't need to use premix.
